FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A goal by Alaska's Aaron Lee with 1:24 left in overtime spoiled a strong effort by the Miami University RedHawks (18-10-3, 13-7-3 CCHA) on Friday night as the Nanooks (9-14-5, 67-10-4 CCHA) skated to a 2-1 win over the RedHawks. Miami outshot Alaska, 35-27, but were kept off the scoreboard until the final minute of the game when the Red and White pulled the goalie and senior Matt Christie sent the game to overtime with his sixth goal of the season.
With time winding down in the first period, Alaska broke a scoreless tie on the power play with Miami sophomore Bill Loupee in the penalty box for tripping. Kyle Greentree ripped a slapshot from the point that found its way through a maze of legs and past Charlie Effinger at the 19:52 mark.
After a scoreless second period, and still down 1-0 with 1:35 left in the third, Miami called timeout and pulled Effinger in favor of an extra attacker. The RedHawks had several attempts to score and finally solved Wylie Rogers with just 23.4 seconds left to make the score 1-1. Cycling the puck in the corner to the left of the Miami net, Jarod Palmer and Marty Guerin held possession of the puck before Guerin centered a pass that Christie redirected behind Rogers for his sixth goal of the season.
Miami dominated the pace of play early in the overtime period but with 1:24 left, Alaska capitalized on an odd-man rush and Aaron Lee banged a rebound behind Effinger for a 2-1 final score. The rush came just after Palmer and Guerin both had scoring opportunities from in close, but Rogers stood strong for Alaska.
The RedHawks and Nanooks complete the two-game series on Saturday at 11:05 p.m. (7:05 p.m. ET). The game can be heard live on WFMG - 101.3 FM, with the pre-game show starting 15 minutes prior to the opening faceoff.
