OXFORD, Ohio - Seeking its ninth Mid-American Conference title in the past 12 seasons, the Miami University women's swimming and diving team (12-0; 7-0 MAC) heads to the 2007 MAC Championships this week in Ypsilanti, Mich. The meet kicks off Wednesday Feb. 14 and concludes Saturday Feb. 17, as the RedHawks attempt to improve on last season's runner-up finish.
With the meet taking place in the home pool of the defending MAC Champion Eastern Michigan Eagles, Miami faces a stern test in its quest for its 16th all-time conference title. Until last season's runner-up finish, Miami had won four straight MAC titles, but the RedHawks were unseated by the Eagles, who placed first by a slim 11-point margin.
This season, Miami is coming off a 12-0 regular season, its first perfect regular season in 30 years. Miami also posted a 7-0 mark in conference dual meets, which included convincing wins over Eastern Michigan and Ohio. By posting a perfect record, Miami extended its streak of MAC dual meet wins to 46 and its streak of regular-season dual meet victories to 16. All told, Miami won its 12 dual meets by an average of 80.5 points.
Miami took home numerous individual accolades during the regular season, as three different athletes were tabbed as the MAC Swimmer of the Week. Freshman Karen Frazier and sophomores Allison Stevens and Malarie Schmidt all were selected for the MAC's weekly swimming honor, while Stevens also took home the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week award. Miami additionally set a pair of school records during the regular season, as Frazier reset the 100 breaststroke school record (1:03.41) and sophomore Alex Enriquez shattered the 1-meter diving record (311.85).
Ranked No. 1 in the Collegeswimming.com Division I Mid-Major Poll, Miami returns four all-conference honorees from last season, including junior Kristen Bezier, the defending MAC Champion in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Senior Margaret Patrick, the 2006 MAC runner-up in the 50 freestyle, also gives Miami a shot at a conference title in the sprint freestyle events.
