OXFORD, Ohio--Miami University's women's soccer team scored one first-half goal and three second-half goals en route to its second and largest shutout of the season as the RedHawks (4-5-3; 2-2-1 Mid-American Conference) defeated the Western Michigan University Broncos (2-8-2; 0-4-1 MAC) on Friday afternoon, 4-0.
Miami quickly got on the board first as a shot deflected off a Western Michigan player to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead at 3:17. Despite and 11-5 advantage in shots during the first half, Miami would carry the 1-0 advantage into the second half.
The RedHawks struck three times over the final 45 minutes. A freshman forward Sara Lund header off the cross bar was knocked in by freshman midfielder/forward Julie Thompson at 53:25 to extend the Miami lead to 2-0. Lund then scored her sixth goal of the season off a junior forward Allison Berkey pass at 69:00. Senior midfielder Jennifer Rush finished off the Miami scoring off a free kick by Berkey at 71:10 to hand the RedHawks the 4-0 win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Krista Pace played 77:41 and recorded five saves as part of the 4-0 shutout and recorded her fourth win of the season. As a team the RedHawks outshot the Broncos 20-10 for the game.
Miami returns to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14 when the RedHawks host the Northern Illinois University Huskies.
