RedHawks Extend Winning Streak to Six with Four-Game Win over Eastern Michigan

OXFORD, Ohio -- Behind a double-double from senior middle hitter Carli Reihman and a season-high 27 digs from junior libero Melissa Zenz, Miami University's volleyball team registered a four-game victory over Eastern Michigan in Mid-American Conference action Friday night. Miami (9-7; 6-1 MAC) had four players collect double-digit kills and three players corral 20-plus digs, while Eastern Michigan (13-9; 3-4 MAC) hit .089 for the match.
Tied at 5-5 in game one, a kill by senior outside hitter Jeanna Staun, a kill by sophomore setter Andrea Atteberry and a service ace by sophomore Maria Leahy started a Miami surge that resulted in a 13-7 lead for the RedHawks. With a five-point lead still in tact for the RedHawks,15-10, Miami forced Eastern Michigan into nine errors over the remainder of the game, allowing the RedHawks to cruise to a 30-13 game-one win. The Eagles collected 11 errors and hit -.133 in the first game.
Eastern Michigan rebounded in game two as the Eagles took a five-point lead, 10-15. Trailing by six points, 14-20, strong serving by Zenz closed the Miami deficit to one point, 19-20, but the RedHawks could not crack the Eagle lead as Eastern Michigan took game two, 30-26.
The RedHawks struggled early in game three as six RedHawk errors put Miami in a seven-point hole, 7-14. Miami slowly crept back into the game and a service ace by Reihman evened the score at 20-20. Eastern Michigan regained a three-point lead, 21-24, but three consecutive Eagle errors alongside a kill by Atteberry gave Miami its first lead of the game, 25-24. Tied as late as 26-26, back-to-back errors by Eastern Michigan combined with kills from Reihman and Atteberry gave Miami a 30-27 come-from-behind win in game three.
Contrary to game three, Miami jumped out of the blocks strong as a left-handed kill by the right-handed Staun gave Miami a four-point lead, 9-5. After a Katie Bates kill cut Miami's lead to two points, 16-14, a kill from Staun and two kills from sophomore Megan Griffin gave Miami a seven-point cushion, 21-14. Holding a nine-point lead, 27-18, three consecutive kills by junior outside hitter Alex Ratcliff gave the RedHawks a 30-18 win.
Reihman collected her seventh double-double of the season with a season-best 18 kills and a season-high 22 digs. Griffin tied a career-high with 16 kills, while Jeanna Staun recorded a career-high three solo blocks. Leahy also set a new career-high with 21 digs and Zenz posted a season-high 27 digs.
Becky Reenders led the Eagles with 14 kills.
Miami hits the court at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, when the RedHawks face Central Michigan. The Chippewas are coming off a four-game loss to Bowling Green on Friday night.
