CLEVELAND - After posting four individual wins in dual meet victories over Bowling Green and Kenyon College, Miami University sophomore Malarie Schmidt (Batavia, Ill./Rosary) has been tabbed as the Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week. The weekly conference honor is the first of Schmidt's career, and she is the third Miamian this season to earn the award.
Schmidt helped Miami (12-0; 7-0 MAC) wrap up a perfect regular season last weekend, finishing with four individual wins in convincing dual meet victories over conference foe Bowling Green and Division III powerhouse Kenyon. In Miami's 192-98 win over Bowling Green -- which clinched Miami's sixth straight season with a perfect conference dual meet record -- Schmidt took top honors in the 200 butterfly (2:06.63) and 200 backstroke (2:05.96). The victory also extended Miami's streak of consecutive conference dual meet wins to 46.
Again doubling up in a 177-118 win over Kenyon, Schmidt posted first-place times in the 100 backstroke (59.02) and the 200 individual medley (2:07.37). With the strong performance of the versatile Schmidt, who captured four wins in four different events during the week, Miami finished the season with a 12-0 dual meet record, which is the Red and White's first perfect regular season since going 10-0 in 1977. The four victories also gave Schmidt 12 individual wins this season.
Schmidt is the second straight Miamian to win the swimmer of the week award, as sophomore Allison Stevens took home the award last week. Freshman Karen Frazier also won the award twice during the regular season.
Schmidt shared the MAC Swimmer of the Week award with Emily Wyman of Ohio, who also won four events in the Bobcats dual meet win over Ball State.
Having wrapped up its first perfect regular season in 30 years, Miami has a week off from competition before traveling to the MAC Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 14-16 in Ypsilanti, Mich. Miami is seeking its ninth MAC title in the past 12 seasons.
