OXFORD, Ohio - The defending Mid-American Conference Champion Miami University men's swimming and diving team and head coach Pete Lindsay announced today (Jan. 17) the hiring of Cincinnati native John Janszen as an assistant coach. Janszen comes to Miami after spending six-and-a-half years at Xavier University as a student-athlete and assistant coach.
"As a young coach, John has an extensive history of coaching at the YMCA, high school and collegiate levels," Lindsay said. "He brings to the team his experiences as a multiple championship finalist swimmer in the Atlantic 10 Conference. We are very excited about having him join our staff."
At the collegiate level, Janszen spent the last one-and-a-half years at Xavier (August 2005 - November 2006) assisting with the men's and women's teams. With the Musketeers, Janszen assisted with all training groups, including the sprint, distance, individual medley and stroke groups. Janszen also was in charge of recruiting for the men's program.
Janszen also brings YMCA coaching experience to Miami, as he split time between the Powel Crosley Jr. YMCA and Gamble Nippert YMCA over the past two years. Serving as an assistant coach at Powel Crosley since August 2005, Janszen ran the National and Senior Team practices and developed a strength and conditioning program that focused on building strength and flexibility. Prior to that, Janszen served as the head swimming coach at Gamble Nippert from September 2004 to August 2005.
"I am excited for the opportunity to contribute to such a distinguished program and for the opportunity to work with Coach Lindsay, who is a distinguished leader in the swimming community," Janszen said.
Additionally, Janszen coached at both the club and high school levels in the Cincinnati area, serving as the head swimming coach at Wyoming High School (November 2005 - February 2006), an assistant coach with the Indian Hill Swim Club (June - July 2003-05) and the head swimming coach at the North Hills Swim and Tennis Club (2000-02).
Prior to his coaching career, Janszen swam for four seasons at Xavier (2000-04), earning Team MVP and the Extra Effort Award in 2001. An Atlantic-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection in four semesters, Janszen also was named Xavier's Most Improved Student-Athlete in 2004.
Janszen graduated from Xavier in May 2004 with a degree in sport management and is currently working towards a master's degree in sport administration. Before attending Xavier, Janszen was a high school swimmer at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati.
