RedHawks Cruise Past Dartmouth 4-1

Sept. 2, 2006

Box Score

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Junior Taylor Florence (Louisville, Ky.) scored two goals and assisted on another as the Miami University field hockey team handed Dartmouth a 4-1 loss on Saturday afternoon. Both of Florence's tallies came off of penalty corners as the RedHawks (2-2) converted on three of their nine corners in the game, while holding the Big Green (0-1) scorless on six corner opportunities.

Florence opened the scoring for Miami early in the first half as she teamed up with juniors Alyssa Nye (Bernville, Pa.) and Laura Seidel (Oley, Pa.) to convert from the top of the circle at the 5:08 mark on Miami's first corner of the game.

Following a Dartmouth tally at the 26:12 mark that knotted the score at 1-1, freshman Katie Brightwell (Louisville, Ky.) found the back of the cage with her first collegiate goal as her shot from the top of the circle eluded goalkeeper Jordan Fedlacek and gave Miami a lead it would not relinquish.

The trio of Florence, Nye and Seidel hooked up again in similar fashion with time winding down in the first frame. Florence scored her team-leading third goal of the season off another corner with two seconds left in the half to give the RedHawks a 3-1 lead.

Midway through the second half, sophomore Courtney Fretz (Oley, Pa.) gave the Red and White some insurance when her first goal of the season made the score 4-1. With an assist from Florence on yet another penalty corner, Fretz's shot put things out of reach for the Big Green as freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Dean (Rye, N.Y.) slammed the door for the RedHawks to earn her second win of the season.

Dean made two saves in the game that saw Miami outshoot Dartmouth, 13-7, while also holding the edge in penalty corners, 9-6.

The RedHawks return home to host Indiana on Tuesday (Sept. 5) at 5 p.m. at the newly-renovated Miami Field Hockey Complex. It marks the second Big Ten opponent to visit the RedHawks this season after head coach Jill Reeve's squad opened the season with a convincing 3-1 triumph over Northwestern on Aug. 26.
