OXFORD, Ohio -- Despite scoring a pair of goals in the game's first 10 minutes, the Miami University field hockey team was unable to hold off a pesky William and Mary squad on Sunday as the RedHawks dropped a 4-3 decision in overtime to the Tribe.
Junior Christine Loyd (Maumee, Ohio) put Miami in front 1-0 just over four minutes in to the first half when she picked up a loose ball in front of the cage and slid it past William and Mary's Gwen Hunter. Assists on Loyd's first goal of the season went to sophomore Teja Kammler (Telford, Pa.) and senior Danielle Perrecone (Carlsbad, Calif.).
Kammler made it 2-0 for the RedHawks five minutes later when she redirected a pass from senior Deb Leighton (Encinitas, Calif.) into the back of the cage at the 9:16 mark. Stationed at the top left of the circle, Leighton faked a shot and instead slid the ball through the crease to Kammler who was waiting just inside the right post.
Kim Hedley cut Miami's lead in half with under seven minutes remaining in the first half when she knocked a loose ball past Miami's Megan Stengel (Louisville, Ky.) after Stengel made the initial save on a shot from the top of the circle.
William and Mary struck twice in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the second half with Hedley evening the score, 2-2, before Laura Kastelic slid a shot from the top of the circle past Stengel off a penalty corner at the 37:09 mark.
Midway through the second half, junior Taylor Florence (Louisville, Ky.) drew the RedHawks even with the Tribe when she potted a penalty stroke that was awarded after Hunter came to rest on top of a loose ball in the crease. Florence made no mistake in converting her first goal of the year as she lifted the ball into the top left corner of the cage to make the score 3-3.
The final 25 minutes of the second half were a defensive struggle as neither team seemed willing to give an inch in their own zone, but William and Mary wasted no time taking to the attack in overtime. After forcing a turnover near midfield, the Tribe used a perfect 2-on-1 break to end the game just 21 seconds into the extra frame. Hedley carried the ball down the right wing and into the circle before rolling the ball across the crease to a diving Gina Cimarelli, who directed the ball just inside the left post.
Miami was outshot, 20-14 in the contest, with William and Mary also holding the edge in penalty corners, 7-5. Hunter made eight saves for the Tribe while Stengel turned away six shots for the RedHawks.
The Red and White returns to action on Sept. 1-2 at the University of Louisville with games versus the host Cardinals and Dartmouth.
NOTES: Miami is now 0-2 all-time versus William and Mary ... Miami's games at Louisville will be a homecoming for four RedHawks as JR Taylor Florence, SO Megan Stengel and FR Katie Brightwell and Maggie Marcum each call Louisville home.
