May 24, 2006

Box Score

KENT, Ohio - The Miami University RedHawks managed just five hits on Wednesday afternoon and dropped an 8-2 decision to the Central Michigan Chippewas in the first round of the 2006 Mid-American Conference Baseball Tournament. The RedHawks now play Eastern Michigan at 10 a.m. on Thursday in an elimination game in the double-elimination tourney.

Miami jumped on the board with an unearned run in the top of the first inning that was the result of an errant throw by the Central Michigan catcher. With Evan Armitage (Milford, Ohio) on second base, Brandon Hillier (Hinsdale, Ill.) on first and two outs in the inning, a throw to third attempting to cut down Armitage who was advancing on a pitch in the dirt, sailed into left field and gave Miami a 1-0 lead.

The RedHawks added another unearned run as a Jordan Petraitis (Canal Fulton, Ohio) infield single scored Hillier from second with two outs in the top of the third. Hillier reached with one out in the inning on Central Michigan's third error of the game and advanced to second on a walk to senior Jeff Carroll (Columbus, Ohio) before giving a 2-0 lead.

A six-run fourth inning gave Central Michigan a 6-2 lead as the Chippewas touched Miami starter Keith Weiser (Hamilton, Ohio) for five hits in the inning. The big blow of the inning was a three-run double off the bat of Brian Campbell that made it 5-2.

After surrendering a run on a pair of two-out hits in the bottom of the fifth, Weiser was chased from the game in favor of junior Jeff Day (West Chester, Ohio), who entered the game with his team down 7-2 and a runner on first before inducing a fly ball to center to end the inning.

Central Michigan made it 8-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Campbell scored on a wild pitch by Day with two outs in the inning to close out the scoring.

Weiser was charged with the loss and dropped to 3-6 on the season while Central Michigan's Josh Collmenter improved to 8-5 after tossing 9.0 innings and allowing just five hits.
