Baseball Drops Game One of Doubleheader to Ohio University

May 13, 2006

Box Score

OXFORD, Ohio - Junior lefthander Keith Weiser held Ohio University to just one run through 7.0 innings but the Bobcats (18-23, 11-11 MAC) exploded for four runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to snap Miami University's eight-game winning streak, handing the RedHawks (25-23, 12-10 MAC) a 7-3 loss on Saturday.

A leadoff double followed by consecutive groundball outs staked Ohio University to 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Junior Keith Weiser's (Hamilton, Ohio) second pitch of the game was lined into the left field corner by J.T. Osburn, who scored two batters later on a groundball to third by Anthony Gressick.

After allowing the double to start the game, Weiser settled in, retiring 14 consecutive Bobcats before a runner reached base on a Miami error with two outs in the fifth inning. The RedHawks touched Ohio starter Derek Witt for seven hits over the first five innings, putting the leadoff batter on base to start three of the five innings, but came away with nothing as Witt fanned five batters and was supported some timely defense.

Ohio loaded the bases in the top of the eighth without the benefit of a hit as Miami made two errors and Weiser hit a batter. Senior Matt Long (Granville, Ohio) entered the game to face Ohio's Anthony Gressick, who took Long's first pitch and lined it over the wall in right centerfield, giving the Bobcats a 5-0 lead.

The Bobcats added two more runs in the top of the ninth, including Gressick's second home run of the game, a solo shot to centerfield, that made it 7-0.

Junior Jeff Carroll (Columbus, Ohio) doubled to lead off the ninth for Miami as the RedHawks mounted a comeback attempt that plated four runs in the inning. Freshman Jordan Petraitis (Canal Fulton, Ohio) followed with a single up the middle that scored pinch runner Ryan Bennett (Kansas City, Mo.) to cut Ohio's lead to 7-1. Senior Will Reynolds (Brownsburg, Ind.) laced a double to right putting runners at second and third for junior Dan Leonard (Canfield, Ohio), who made it 7-2 with an infield single that scored Petraitis. Chris Nadeau (Saline, Mich.) singled through the right side to bring Reynolds in to score, chasing Witt from the game in favor of Adam Goodpasture. After a pair of wild pitches put runners on second and third, sophomore Evan Armitage (Milford, Ohio) rolled a groundball to second that brought in Leonard with Miami's fourth and final run.

Despite allowing just three hits, Weiser was tagged with the loss and dropped to 3-5 on the season. Witt picked up the victory as he tossed 8.1 innings and allowed 12 hits while striking out six to improve to 6-4 on the season.

Miami and Ohio play game two of the doubleheader beginning at approximately 4:30 p.m. Senior Graham Taylor (Villa Hills, Ky.) will start on the mound for Miami.
