OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University Department of Athletics celebrated a highly successful 2005-06 academic year on Monday night with its annual Senior Dessert. Held in the Shriver Center, the Senior Dessert honors Miami's senior student-athletes, while also recognizing teams for their achievements in the classroom, on the field of play, and through community service efforts.
The men's cross country team and the women's swimming and diving squad were recognized by the Athletic Policy Committee for having the highest team grade-point averages in the department. The men's cross country team posted a 3.17 GPA, while the women's swimming and diving team posted a department-best 3.33 GPA.
The ice hockey team was awarded the inaugural Most Improved Team GPA Award as the 2006 Central Collegiate Hockey Association Champions carded a 3.08 team GPA.
Miami's women's basketball team was presented with the Hal Jasper Community Service Award in recognition of its efforts to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina in the New Orleans area. Prior to their trip to New Orleans to play Tulane on Jan. 2, the RedHawks collected non-perishable food items and clothing to donate to the people of St. Bernard Parish, a New Orleans community that was ravaged by the hurricane in late summer 2005.
Another first-time award was handed to the men's swimming and diving team, which was awarded the inaugural RedHawk Cup, given to the team that best exemplifies the spirit of Miami Athletics through academic achievement, sportsmanship and support for fellow student-athletes.
Seventy eight RedHawks were awarded the Senior Scholar-Athlete Citation, presented by the Miami Alumni Association to those who achieved a 3.0 GPA or better during their senior year at Miami. In addition, 17 Miami seniors were presented with the Mid-American Conference's Presidential Award for maintaining a 3.5 GPA or better throughout their careers.
Head strength and conditioning coach James Carsey honored six Miami student-athletes for earning National Strength and Conditioning Association All-America honors. Carsey recognized Lindsay Dunmead (soccer), Kate Norris (volleyball), John Busing (football), Andy Greene (ice hockey), Ceith Creekmur (men's track and field) and Taryn Nye (women's track and field) for their efforts on the field of play and in the weightroom.
Additionally, Miami's five teams that have won championships so far this year were recognized for their accomplishments. Those teams are: Men's Swimming and Diving (MAC Champions), Ice Hockey (CCHA Champions), Senior Synchronized Skating (National Champions), Collegiate Synchronized Skating (National Champions) and Football (Co-MAC East Champions).
