Women's Tennis Stops Falcons With Rally, 4-3

April 1, 2006

OXFORD, Ohio--On a chilly day at Hepburn Varsity Tennis Courts, Miami University's women's tennis team (8-7; 3-1 MAC) brought the heat when it needed it most, rallying behind strong singles play to capture a 4-3 win over Bowling Green State University in Mid-American Conference action.

Playing its first outdoor match of the year, Miami appeared sluggish out of the gates, dropping all three doubles contests and falling behind early in singles play. The RedHawks, who trailed 2-0 after a straight-set loss at third singles, responded behind senior Remy Swain, who came from behind (2-6, 6-2, 6-4) to defeat Kelsey Jakupcin at fifth singles and get the RedHawks on the board. Also rallying was Victoria Pulido at fourth singles, who captured the last two sets to down the Falcons' Andrea Meister, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

A hard-fought 7-6, 6-3 victory by Leda Pesatova over Jenna Nussbaum at second singles put Miami in front, 3-2, and the RedHawks clinched the win when Katrina Lomidze rallied late in the third set to earn a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 victory over Ashley Jakupcin at first singles.

"It was a very satisfying win," head coach Ray Reppert said. "We came out a little stiff in doubles and were in trouble early in singles. It was cold, we were playing without one of our leaders in Linda (Jirouskova) and we had any number of reasons to give up. But we had the attitude that we were going to win the match, and everyone stepped up to get it done."

Miami, which was playing without returning all-MAC honoree Linda Jirouskova for the second straight match due to illness, closes out a four-match homestand next weekend when it hosts Northern Illinois and non-conference foe Marshall.
