OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami University Director of Athletics Brad Bates has announced that James Carsey, an integral factor in Miami's strength and conditioning program since 2001, has been announced as the successor to long-time strength and conditioning coach Dan Dalrymple, who departed in February to become the head strength coach for the New Orleans Saints.
"In working the past five years under Dan Dalrymple, James learned from an icon," Bates said. "His dedication to Miami Athletics as an intern and assistant, and his success in getting the most out of so many of our student-athletes has earned him this right. While Coach Dalrymple, who built this program from the ground up, will be missed, we are fortunate to have an individual in Coach Carsey whose familiarity with the mission of Miami's strength and conditioning program allows for a seamless transition. I have complete confidence that Miami's strength and conditioning tradition will continue to flourish under his direction."
Carsey, who joined Miami's strength and conditioning program as an intern in 2001, has served as the program's first and only assistant strength coach since 2002. Over the past three seasons, he has overseen the strength and conditioning programs for 12 of Miami's varsity sports while assisting with all 19 RedHawk athletic programs. His numerous responsibilities, along with working with Miami's coaches and student-athletes to promote individual and team success, have included assisting with the daily operation and scheduling of the weight room and overseeing the upkeep and purchase of weightroom equipment.
Recognized as the 2003-04 Miami Athletics Teammate of the Year in recognition of his commitment to Miami Athletics, Carsey has worked with 10 National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-Americans while seven of the teams he has worked with have won league championships and eight others have captured runner-up finishes. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Collegiate Strength Coach Certified and is certified by the USA Weight Lifting Association as a Sport Performance Coach.
A 1997 graduate of Ashland University, where he was a four-year football letterwinner and All-American, Carsey holds both a bachelor of science and master's of education in sports sciences (2004) from his alma mater. After completing his undergraduate work in 1997, Carsey spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator, weight room coordinator and assistant wrestling coach for North Union High School in Richwood, Ohio. In 1999, he returned to Ashland to serve as a graduate assistant football and strength coach, where he designed and supervised the weight and running program for the football team.
Dalrymple, a member of Miami's Athletic Hall of Fame and former football standout for the Red and White, had spent 16 seasons as the first and only full-time strength and conditioning coach at Miami. Under his direction, the program moved in 2001 to the Walter L. Gross Student-Athlete Development Center, where a 10,000-square foot, two-level weightroom has become the centerpiece of a program that has produced 42 NSCA Strength and Conditioning All-Americans since 1993. Dalrymple departed in February after being hired by former Miami assistant football coach and newly-hired New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton as the Head Strength Coach for the NFL organization.
