CLEVELAND - For the second time this season, Miami University freshman Karen Frazier (Placerville, Calif./St. Francis) has been tabbed as the Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week, the conference office announced today (Dec. 5). At last weekend's Miami Invitational, Frazier reset her own varsity record in the 100 breaststroke and turned in a NCAA "B" cut with a time of 1:03.41.
Frazier's school-record time in the 100 breaststroke marked the third time this season she has tied or set the Miami record in the event. Frazier first set the Miami 100 breaststroke standard in her first collegiate meet against Akron (1:04.18) on Oct. 27, and she later tied her own school record against Ball State on Nov. 3.
In helping the RedHawks win the team title at the 13th Annual Miami Invitational, Frazier also swam a leg on the first-place 200 medley relay team, which clocked in at 1:45.22, and finished third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.82. Frazier's strong performance helped Miami finish the three-day meet with 1,452.5 points, besting second-place Denison by 252.5 points.
For Frazier, it is the second swimmer of the week award in her young career. Frazier won her first MAC Swimmer of the Week honor on Oct. 31, 2006, and she is only the second Miamian in the past two seasons to take home the weekly conference swimming and diving honor.
Sporting a perfect 5-0 record, including a 4-0 mark in MAC dual meets, Frazier and the RedHawks are off from competition until Jan. 12, 2007 when they hosts the Toledo Rockets at 6 p.m. Over the semester break, Miami will take its annual winter training trip to Florida before beginning its push to the conference meet, which is slated for Feb. 14-16 in Ypsilanti, Mich.
