OXFORD, Ohio - A goal by senior Danielle Perrecone (Carlsbad, Calif.) midway through the second half gave the Miami University field hockey team a 2-1 win over Kent State on Friday afternoon. The win was the RedHawks' (7-8, 4-1 MAC) second over the Golden Flashes (5-10, 2-4 MAC) this season, marking the first time since 1996 that Miami swept the season series from Kent State. The RedHawks downed the Golden Flashes 7-4 back on Sept. 22.
Sophomore Teja Kammler (Telford, Pa.) opened the scoring for Miami in the game's 16th minute when she tucked the ball behind Kent State's Kara Copeland with her third goal of the season. Perrecone started the play with a pass from the top of the circle to freshman Mary Hull (San Diego, Calif.), who moved the ball to Kammler stationed just off the left post.
Kent State evened the score less than five minutes later when Kate Perry and Elizabeth Lahey combined at 19:05 to beat Miami's Megan Stengel (Louisville, Ky.). Lahey carried the ball down the right win and made a sharp centering pass that Perry one-timed from just five yards out and into the cage.
Neither team was able to take advantage of a penalty corner in the first half, but Miami jumped on its first opportunity in the second half and scored what proved to be the game-winning goal. Just over a minute into the second half junior Laura Seidel (Oley, Pa.) stopped the entry pass from classmate Alyssa Nye (Bernville, Pa) and slid it to junior Taylor Florence (Louisville, Ky.) at the top left of the circle. Florence gave Perrecone a one-touch pass just to her left and Perrecone left little doubt as she rifled a shot through traffic and in for her seventh goal of the year.
Stengel turned away six of the seven shots she faced on the afternoon and improved to 4-7 on the season. The RedHawks held a 7-5 egde in penalty corners and outshot the Golden Flashes 13-10.
The win moved Miami to 4-1 in Mid-American Conference play, tied with Ohio University for top spot in the six-team league. Miami and Ohio faceoff tomorrow at 1 p.m.
NOTES: Seidel's assist on Perrecone's goal was her league-leading ninth of the season ... 85 fouls were called in the game ... Kent State was called 42, while Miami was whistled for 43.
