Coming off a win over a pair of Big East foes in its first meet of 2006, the Miami University women's swimmming and diving team (6-1, 4-0) resumes Mid-American Conference dual meet action Saturday when it travels to face the Toledo Rockets at the UT Student Recreation Center. Miami, which is ranked No. 2 in the latest Division I Mid-Major, is seeking to extend its streak of 36 consecutive conference dual meet wins which dates back to 2001.
TELEVISION DEBUT: Miami's conference meet against Toledo Saturday will be broadcast on the Buckeye Cable Sports Network (BCSN) beginning at 1 p.m. As two of the top schools in the Mid-American Conference, the RedHawks, ranked second in the Division I Mid-Major Poll, and the Rockets, ranked tenth, have combined for 11 dual meet wins this season. Miami's last conference dual meet loss was on Feb. 3, 2001 to Eastern Michigan, and its current streak of 36 consecutive MAC dual meet wins began when the RedHawks defeated Northern Illinois and Ball State in a conference triangular meet on Nov. 3, 2001.
NATIONAL RECOGNITION: After posting six wins in the first half of the season, the Miami RedHawks were rewarded with the No. 2 ranking in the Division I Mid-Major Poll released by collegeswimming.com in late December. Harvard University earned the No. 1 ranking in the poll, and the RedHawks were one of five Mid-American Conference schools ranked in the top 25. Eastern Michigan (No. 3), Akron (No. 7), Toledo (No. 10) and Bowling Green (No. 11) all joined the RedHawks in the rankings.
MILESTONE ALERT: Now in his 24th season as head coach, Dave Jennings is two wins shy of his 200th career dual meet win with the Miami women's swimming and diving program. Jennings current record of 198-89 with the women's team is good for a .690 winning percentage, and in his coaching career, Jennings is 202-93. A Miami Hall of Fame inductee in 1996, Jennings spent one season as the head coach of the Miami men's swimming team in 1984-85, compiling a 4-4 record. Should the RedHawks continue their conference winning streak (their last conference dual meet loss was Feb. 3, 2001), Jennings could collect his 200th win on Jan. 28 when the RedHawks face Ohio University at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
LAST TIME OUT - CINCINNATI, KENYON AND LOUISVILLE QUADRANGULAR: In its first meet of 2006, Miami showed no signs of rust after a six-week break from competition as it beat a pair of Big East schools and finished first in its quadrangular home meet. At the Nixon Aquatic Center, Miami placed first with 189 points and bested two Big East foes, the second-place Louisville Cardinals (167 points) and the third-place Cincinnati Bearcats (101). The Kenyon Ladies, a Division III powerhouse, finished fourth with 79 points. The RedHawks posted wins in six events as junior swimmer Margaret Patrick and senior diver Christin Eberst each tallied a pair of victories.
WE'RE GOING STREAKING: With a 176-103 win over Eastern Michigan (Nov. 12), the RedHawks extended their streak of consecutive MAC dual-meet wins to 36. In the 2005-06 season, Miami has already defeated four MAC foes--Akron (Oct. 28), Buffalo (Oct. 29), Ball State (Nov. 5) and Eastern Michigan (Nov. 12)--and it has three MAC dual meets remaining with Toledo (Jan. 21), Ohio (Jan. 28) and Bowling Green (Feb. 4). Miami has not lost a MAC dual meet since Feb. 3, 2001 when it was defeated by Eastern Michigan.
FRESHMAN FREESTYLING: In her first season at Miami, freshman distance swimmer Jenn Flaherty has won eight individual freestyle events. Flaherty has won the 1,000 free five times, the 500 free twice and the 1650 free one time. Flaherty already owns two top-10 times as her time of 10:15.98 in the 1,000 free against Eastern Michigan (Nov. 12) stands as the seventh best in Miami history. Her time of 17:05.07 in the 1,650 free set against Buffalo (Oct. 29) also stands as the seventh-best time in school history.
BOARD OF EDUCATION: As Miami's top diver, senior Christin Eberst--last season's MAC Co-Diver of the Year-- has won 12 of the 15 diving events she has entered this season. As the only Miami women's swimmer/diver to be honored as the MAC Athlete of the Week (Nov. 8), Eberst reset the school record in the three-meter dive (307.20) with her performance in the Illinois/Marshall tri-meet (Nov. 4). Since last season, Eberst has won 27 of the last 37 diving events she has entered.
BLINK AND YOU'LL MISS IT: In the freestyle sprint events, junior Margaret Patrick has consistently been Miami's fastest swimmer, posting four sweeps of the 50 and 100 free against Akron (Oct. 28), Ball State (Nov. 5), Eastern Michigan (Nov. 12) and in Miami's quadrangular meet (Jan. 13). At the Georgia Invitational (Dec. 2-4), home of the No. 1 Lady Bulldogs, Patrick posted a career best time in the 50 free (23.68).
TWICE THE FUN: Eight different RedHawks have posted mutiple wins in a meet this season, led by diver Christin Eberst who has notched multiple on six occasions. Seven other athletes --- Jenn Flaherty, Katie Forster, Margaret Patrick, Melissa Roemmele, Malarie Schmidt, Allison Stevens and Katie Unger --- have won multiple events in at least one meet. In addition, Patrick has won multiple events at four meets, while Flaherty, Schmidt and Roemmele have won multiple events at two meets.
ONE-STOP RECORD SHOP: Miami boasts four school-records holders on its 2005-06 squad as Laura Armbruster (400 IM-set in 2005), Maggi Bulla (200 free-set in 2004), Katie Forster (500 free-set in 2003; 200 fly set in 2005) and Christin Eberst (three-meter dive-set in 2005) all rejoin the RedHawks.
