OXFORD, Ohio - After leading the Miami women's swimming and diving team to their fourth consecutive Mid-American Conference team title in 2005, two RedHawk seniors, swimmer Laura Armbruster (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) and diver Christin Eberst (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) were named Honorable Mention Scholar All-Americans by the College Swim Coaches Association of America. In addition to their individual accolades, the RedHawks were honored as an Academic All-American team after posting the 29th highest grade point average (3.31) in the nation.
Armbruster, a zoology major with a 3.95 GPA, qualified for the Honorable Mention Scholar All-America Team after posting NCAA B qualifying times at the MAC Championships in the 200 IM (2:04.22), 400 IM (4:22.74) and 200 Breast (2:19.04). Her top finish at the conference meet in those three events was her silver-medal winning performance in the 400 IM. This was the second time in Armbruster's career that she was named Scholar All-American by the CSCAA. Armbruster also garnered numerous other honors last season as she was named to the All-MAC First-Team, Academic All-MAC and CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.
Eberst, a political science major with a 3.65 GPA, was the MAC Co-Diver of the Year after winning the one-meter diving title and finishing as the runner-up in the three-meter competition. After the conference meet, Eberst went on to finish sixth in the three-meter and 13th in the one-meter at the NCAA Zone C Diving Meet. For Eberst, this is the third consecutive year that she was honored by the CSCAA for her performance in and out of the pool.
Head coach Dave Jennings and the RedHawks were also recognized for having one of the top 30 GPA's in the nation as their 3.31 team GPA ranked just behind a quartet of schools--Auburn, Dartmouth, Evansville and Wright State--who tied for 25th (3.32). Last season, Jennings had 21 student-athletes qualify for the MAC Honor Roll while another four athletes were honored as Academic All-MAC selections.
The RedHawks open their 2005-06 season in search of their fifth straight MAC title when they travel to Akron on Oct. 28.
