BUFFALO, N.Y. - Playing in their Mid-American Conference opener, the Miami University women's soccer team tallied two first-half goals and held the Buffalo Bulls scoreless as they captured a 2-0 victory on Friday night at UB Stadium. Senior Lindsay Dunmead (Northville, Mich./Northville) and junior Kathleen Vistica (Monrovia, MD./Monrovia) each scored for the RedHawks (3-3-0, 1-0 in MAC) while the goalkeeping tandem of senior Leigh Terry (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) and junior Shannon Chew (Mason, Ohio/Mason) combined for their third shutout of the season.
Dunmead posted the RedHawks first score at 15:07 off an assist from junior Katie Boyd (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), her first goal of the season and first game-winner of her career. Almost twelve minutes later, the RedHawk offense struck again as Vistica added her second goal of the season in the 28th minute off a cross from junior Carrie Shields (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman).
In goal, the platoon of Terry and Chew proved effective once again as they stopped three Buffalo shots en route to the shutout victory. The keeper tandem has held three of the RedHawks last four opponents scoreless and has allowed only one goal in the past four games.
Miami's victory over Buffalo was its first MAC-opening win since 2002 when it defeated Toledo, 2-0 on Sept. 13. The win also gave the RedHawks their eighth win over the Bulls in their last nine meetings.
The RedHawks close out their four-game road trip when they travel to face the Kent State Golden Flashes, the preseason favorite in the MAC, on Sunday at 1 p.m. In its match against Kent State, Miami will be looking to open conference play with two-consecutive wins for the first time since 2002, and they will be seeking to get above .500 for the first time this season.
