LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Playing in their 2005 regular-season opener, the Miami University women's soccer team fell, 3-0, to the host Louisville Cardinals on Sunday at Cardinal Park. Senior keeper Leigh Terry (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) recorded five first-half saves to keep Miami within striking distance, but the RedHawks could not overcome Cardinal midfielder Monique Gjini's two-goal effort.
Gjini put the Cardinals on the board at the 31:21 mark in the first half, and Louisville added two second-half scores to provide the final margin of victory. Laura Walker scored at 68:54 while Gjini tallied her second goal of the afternoon in the 80th minute.
The RedHawks recorded six shots on the day, including three by junior Kathleen Vistica (Monrovia, Md.), but they were unable to find the back of the net. Louisville held the edge in both shots (19-6) and corner kicks (3-2) in the contest.
In the season-opener, two RedHawk newcomers made their debut in the starting lineup as freshman Danielle Hays (Apex, N.C./Apex) and sophomore transfer Kristen Lies (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northern Kentucky) earned the starting nod at midfielder and defender, respectively.
The RedHawks now have one week in between games as they face the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. next Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the UK Soccer Complex.
