OXFORD, Ohio--Miami University announced the hiring of Edward Edson as its women's swimming assistant coach. Edson comes to Miami after two seasons as an assistant with the men's and women's teams at Connecticut College in New London, Conn. He replaces Phil Kraus, who left after four seasons with the RedHawks to join the staff at South Carolina.
"I am very pleased to have Ed become a part of our Miami Swimming and Diving family," head coach Dave Jennings said. "His enthusiasm, work ethic and organizational skills are exceptional, and he is the type of person our program needs to move to the next level."
Edson's duties at Connecticut College included coordinating the team's strength and conditioning program and arranging team travel. He also was in charge of recruiting.
During his tenure, Edson coached Kate Kovenock, who was a 2005 All-American after runner-up finishes at the NCAA Championship in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. Kovenock also won the 2004 NCAA Division III National Championship after finishing the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.32.
Both the men's and women's programs improved each year under Edson. In 2005, the women's team broke nine school records en route to a fifth-place finish in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). The men posted their highest conference finish in school history (eighth-place) last season and set 10 school records.
Edson's athletes also excelled academically as the men's and women's teams were honored in 2005 by the Collegiate Swim Coaches of America for their work in the classroom. The men's program finished with a 3.39 grade point average--the fourth-best among Division III swimming programs--and the women posted a 3.32 team GPA.
In addition to his assistant coaching experience, Edson has worked for three years with Jennings at the Total Performance swim camp. He also has worked at the Harvard and Auburn summer swim camps.
Prior to coaching at Connecticut, Edson swam collegiately at Tufts University where he was voted two-time team MVP. A team captain and an Academic All-America selection in 2003, he also was a member of the record-setting 400 freestyle relay. Edson graduated from Tufts in 2003 with a degree in economics.
