YPSILANTI, Mich.--Miami University's women's tennis team (12-5; 2-1 MAC) picked up an important Mid-American Conference win Saturday afternoon at Eastern Michigan University (4-9; 2-2 MAC), downing the 2004 MAC Tournament runners-up, 5-2.
Powered by hard-fought wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, Miami claimed the all-important doubles point to surge out to an early lead. Linda Jirouskova (Milevska, Czech Republic) and Katrina Lomidze (Pompano Beach, FL/Ft. Lauderdale Prep) picked up a big win at No. 1 doubles, downing the EMU tandem of Victoria Domina and Vanessa Frankowski, 9-8, a day after the Eagle pair upset a nationally-ranked tandem from Marshall.
Jirouskova and Lomidze would fall at No.1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, but Miami's depth would prove the difference, as the RedHawks swept the remaining singles matches. Freshman Kelly Douple (Dayton, OH/Centerville) improved to 4-0 in MAC singles play with another impressive comeback, winning 1-6, 7-6 (3), 10-6. Leda Pesatova (Podlesi, Czech Republic), Victoria Pulido (Cuernavaca, Mexico) and Remy Swain (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) won in straight sets at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Miami closes out a lengthy nine-match roadstand with another important match next Friday when it takes on defending MAC Champion Marshall in Huntington at 1 p.m.
