OXFORD, Ohio -- Four Miami University student-athletes who have enjoyed remarkable success on the fields of competition this season have been honored for the hard work that helped get them there, Assistant Athletic Director for Strength, Speed and Conditioning Dan Dalrymple has announced. Seniors Jackie Poggendorf (Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain) and Will Rueff (Louisville, KY/Trinity) and sophomores Lashonda Davis (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo) and Jake Dunkleberger (Smyrna, GA/The Lovett School) have joined a long list of Miami standouts to earn All-American status from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
Davis, who won the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championship in the 60-meter dash earlier this spring, already owns Miami indoor records in the 55-meter dash, 60-meter dash and long jump. A first-team all-MAC selection in outdoor track and field as a freshman, Davis finished second at the MAC Championships in the 100-meter dash and long jump, while helping the 4X100 relay team to the conference gold and a program record. Davis went on to qualify for the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the long jump.
Dunkleberger wasted little time in establishing himself as one of the nation's best in the hammer throw, finishing sixth at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships as a freshman and shattering the program record in the event. The NCAA All-American, whose best toss went 213-7, also is the defending MAC Champion in the event and qualified for NCAA Regionals in the shot put.
Poggendorf is nearing the end of a remarkable career in the circle at Miami, already owning the program's career and single-season strikeout records, as well as records for career starts, appearances and innings pitched. A two-time second-team all-MAC selection, Poggendorf has a 16-11 record this season with a 1.93 earned run average and 163 strikeouts. She presently rides a streak of 34 consecutive innings without allowing a run. At the plate, Poggendorf, the 2003 MAC Tournament MVP, is batting .341 with 15 doubles and 13 RBIs.
Rueff helped Miami's football team to a second straight MAC East Division Championship and bowl game appearance in 2004, while starting at defensive tackle or the third season. A key component of a defensive front that helped the RedHawks rank among the nation's top 30 in rushing defense, Rueff totaled 26 tackles and four stops for loss while clogging up the middle for the Miami defense. The senior finished his career with a bench press of more than 400 lbs. and a squat of more than 600 lbs.
The NSCA All-American Strength and Conditioning Athletes of the Year program recognizes those collegiate athletes, whose athletic accomplishments, in the opinion of their strength coach, reflect their dedication to strength training and conditioning. Those honored were also recognized for their academic and personal accomplishments and their integrity as student-athletes. Power Systems, Inc., sponsors the program. Nominations were made by Dalrymple and assistant coach James Carsey.
Since 1993, 45 Miamians have garnered the honor. This year's class joins such former Miami greats as basketball all-American Wally Szczerbiak, college football's all-time leading touchdown scorer Travis Prentice and two-time track and field all-American Becca Williams.
