OXFORD, Ohio - Sophomore lefthander Keith Weiser (Hamilton, Ohio) tied a career high with 10 strikeouts as the Miami University RedHawks (21-12, 5-2 MAC) scored in six consecutive innings and downed the University at Buffalo Bulls (11-17, 1-4 MAC) by a score of 10-3 on Friday afternoon at McKie Field.
The RedHawks put a trio of runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Ryne Robinson (Toledo, Ohio) plated the first two runs with a triple to right centerfield that scored senior Tyler Tabler (Cincinnati, Ohio) and junior Eric Radley (Hermitage, Tenn.). Sophomore Brandon Hillier's (Hinsdale, Ill.) double to left center scored Robinson, making it 3-0 for the Red and White.
Freshman Evan Armitage (Milford, Ohio) and Hillier each collected run-scoring singles in the home half of the fourth as Miami gave starting pitcher Keith Weiser a 5-0 cushion after the sophomore lefthander fanned five batters through the first four innings. Weiser responded to the added run support by striking out the side in the top of the fifth, his sixth, seventh and eighth of the game.
Armitage drove in his second run of the game for Miami, with a two-out single to right that scored junior Geoff Orr (Orland Park, Ill.) from second and made it 6-0 after five innings. Orr dropped down a bunt for a base hit and then stole second to put himself in scoring position.
Miami manufactured a run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-0 lead. Robinson led off the inning with a bunt single and promptly stole second. He advanced to third on Hillier's ground ball to second and scored on senior John Slone's (Cincinnati, Ohio) sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Pinch-hitter Will Reynolds (Brownsburg, Ind.) made it 8-0 for Miami when his double down the leftfield line brought senior Courtney Campbell (Evansville, Ind.) in to score from second base.
Buffalo spoiled Weiser's shutout bid with a run in the top of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Chris McGraw. After recording the second out of the eighth with his 10th strikeout of the game, Weiser was lifted in favor of senior righthander Brad Bachman (Harrison, Ohio), who fanned the only batter he faced in the eighth. Weiser went 7.2 innings and allowed just one run on three hits without allowing a walk to improve to 5-0 on the season. It was the second consecutive ten-strikeout outing for Weiser.
Junior John Franzese (Barrington, Ill.) put Miami into double figures for the eighth time in 2005 with his first home run of the year, a two-run shot to left that scored Hillier from first.
The Bulls made a late charge in the top of the ninth, scoring two runs off junior lefthander Sam Shorts (Glen Ellyn, Ill.). Only one of the runs was earned as Miami made a pair of errors in the inning.
The RedHawks continue the three-game series versus Buffalo on Saturday afternoon (April 16) with a 1 p.m. start. Junior lefthander Graham Taylor (Villa Hills, Ky.) is slated to start on the mound for Miami.
Notes: SO Keith Weiser posted consecutive 10-strikeout games for the first time in his career ... his 10 strikeouts tied a career high ... Miami is now 15-0 all-time versus the Bulls ... Miami has won the first game of all three of its MAC series this year.
