RedHawks Down Marshall, 14-3, In MAC Home Opener

OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University baseball team (14-10, 3-1 MAC) tied a season high with 14 runs on Friday afternoon as they downed the Marshall University Thundering Herd, 14-3, at McKie Field. The victory extends Miami's home winning streak to four games and its overall winning streak to three games.

Miami exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the second inning, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of junior Jason Brown (Fairfield, Ohio). Senior Brian Canada (Fishers, Ind.) scored the first run of the inning when he scored on a single to right by junior Geoff Orr (Orland Park, Ill.). Senior Paul Frietch (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored on an errant throw to third by Marshall's pitcher, making the score 2-0, before Brown ripped his fourth double of the year.

Orr drove in his second run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With senior John Slone (Cincinnati, Ohio), who singled to lead off the inning, on second base, Orr ripped a double just inside the third base line, making the score 5-0 for Miami. Orr then stole third and came into score when the throw to third by Marshall's catcher sailed into left field. After Miami loaded the bases, sophomore Ryne Robinson's (Toledo, Ohio) made it 7-0 for the RedHawks with an infield single that scored senior Tyler Tabler (Cincinnati, Ohio) from third.

The RedHawks tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning without registering a hit. Miami used a leadoff walk and a stolen base combined with a Marshall error go ahead 9-0.

Junior Eric Radley (Hermitage, Tenn.) and senior Mike Moljewski (Shelby Twp., Mich.) each collected RBI doubles in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the RedHawks an 11-0 lead.

Marshall touched Miami's Keith Weiser (Hamilton, Ohio) for three unearned runs in the top of the eighth after the lefthander dominated the Thundering Herd through the first 7.2 innings. Through 8.0 innings, Weiser surrendered just six hits and none of the three runs he allowed were earned. He was relieved in the ninth inning by junior lefthander Sam Shorts (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), who allowed two hits in the ninth but recorded all three outs in the inning via strikeout.

The RedHawks and the Thundering Herd play game two of the series on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Junior Graham Taylor (Villa Hills, Ky.) is slated to start on the mound for Miami, while junior righthander Chris Cummings will toe the rubber the Marshall.

Notes: JR Geoff Orr extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in the second inning ... SO Ryne Robinson and Orr each drove in three runs ... Orr went 3-for-5 ... Weiser lowered his ERA to 2.49.
