RedHawks Fall To Xavier In Home Opener, 11-5

March 4, 2005

Box Score

OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University RedHawks (0-4, 0-0 MAC) remained winless in 2005 as the Xavier University Musketeers (1-6, 0-0 A-10) pounded out 11 hits on their way to an 11-5 victory, their first of the season, at McKie Field on Friday afternoon.

Miami got on the board first with an unearned run in the bottom half of the first inning. Junior Jason Brown (Fairfield, Ohio) led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single to left field by junior Will Reynolds (Brownsburg, Ind.). Senior catcher John Slone's (Cincinnati, Ohio) sacrifice bunt was fielded by the pitcher but his throw to first base was off the mark, allowing Brown to score from second.

After retiring the Musketeers in order in the top of the first, junior lefthander Sam Shorts (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) was unable to retire a batter in the second, getting roughed up for six runs on five hits before giving way to senior Brad Bachman (Harrison, Ohio) who allowed another run before getting out of the jam.

The RedHawks got one back in the bottom of the second. After sophomore Ryne Robinson (Toledo, Ohio) reached on a fielder's choice with one out and stole second, Brown laced a single to left, plating Miami's second baseman and making the score 7-2.

Xavier made it 10-2 with a trio of runs in the top of the fourth on three hits off of Bachman, who was replaced in the top of the fifth by freshman Chris Niro (Walton Hills, Ohio) after throwing three innings and surrendering four runs, three of which were earned, on four hits.

Robinson got of two of those three runs back for the RedHawks in the bottom half of the fourth with a two-run double to left center field that scored junior Eric Radley (Gallatin, Tenn.) and senior Tyler Tabler (Cincinnati, Ohio) to make the score 10-4 in favor of Xavier.

Niro retired all three batters he faced in the fifth and gave way to classmate Bobby Oberschlake (Felicity, Ohio) in the sixth. Oberschlake, making his first collegiate appearance, retired the Musketeers in order in the sixth but allowed a run in the seventh on two hits, making the score 11-4, before being relieved by sophomore Jeff Day (West Chester, Ohio) with two outs in the seventh. Day retired the only batter he faced as freshman Matt Erwood (Atlanta, Ga.) came on to pitch for Miami in the eighth inning.

The RedHawks pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth when Radley plated junior third baseman Geoff Orr (Orland Park, Ill.), who doubled one out in the inning, finishing the scoring at 11-5.

Freshman Steve Antoniotti (Farmington Hills, Mich.) made his collegiate debut on the mound for Miami in the ninth and held the Musketeers scoreless, allowing just one runner to reach base.

Shorts took the loss for Miami, dropping his record to 0-1 while Mike Creevy threw eight innings for Xavier to pick up the win.

Eric Radley continued his hot-hitting for the RedHawks going 3-for-4 and is now hitting .615 on the season. Ryne Robinson drove in two runs for Miami.

The RedHawks travel to the University of Louisville on Mar. 5-6 for a three-game set with the Cardinals. The teams will play a single game on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and a doubleheader on Sunday with the first pitch slated for noon.
