BRADENTON, Fla. - In game two of a doubleheader with the University of Rhode Island, the Miami University RedHawks (8-8) managed just five hits and committed four errors as they were defeated, 4-2, by the Rams.
Rhode Island got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the second. With runners on first and third and two outs, sophomore Ryne Robinson (Toledo, Ohio) dropped a fly ball in left field allowing both runners to score.
Miami got one of those runs back in the top of the fifth on senior Brian Canada's (Fishers, Ind.) sacrifice fly to center that scored Robinson, who had doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a ground ball to second by freshman Evan Armitage (Milford, Ohio).
The Rams scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth off junior Sam Shorts (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), who relieved freshman Steve Antoniotti (Farmington Hills, Mich.) after he went 4.0 innings and gave up two runs on two hits.
In the top of the eighth Miami made it 3-2 with an unearned run of its own on Will Reynolds' (Brownsburg, Ind.) infield single as senior John Slone (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored from third. Pinch-hitter Tyler Tabler (Cincinnati, Ohio) came to the plate with two outs and runners on first second but went down on strikes to end the inning.
Antoniotti was tagged with the loss, the first of his collegiate career.
Miami finishes its spring trip on Saturday with an 11 a.m. game versus the University of Illinois.
