BRADENTON, Fla. - In their second game of the day, the Miami University RedHawks (7-7) got back to the .500 mark for the season with a 10-4 win over Fairleigh Dickinson University (0-4) behind a strong outing from freshman righthander John Ely (Homewood, Ill.).
Junior Paul Frietch (Cincinnati, Ohio) staked the RedHawks to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a three-run home run deep to right field. His second home run of the season came with sophomore Ryne Robinson (Toledo, Ohio) and senior Brian Canada (Fishers, Ind.) aboard.
After allowing the first two batters of the second inning to reach base, Ely, making his first collegiate start, struck out the next two batters and induced an inning-ending groundout to second that ended the scoring threat.
Senior catcher John Slone (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Canada each drove in a run in the second inning for Miami to give the RedHawks a 5-0 advantage heading into the third.
The RedHawks scored another run in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to center field by senior Sam Sellery (Carmel, Ind.) that scored Canada from third and made the score 6-0. Canada had doubled to left and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Fairleigh Dickinson got four runs back in the top of the seventh. The first run came across when shortstop Eric Radley's (Hermitage, Tenn.) throw to first base sailed wide and allowed the runner on second base to score. Two infield singles and a double to right field later, the score was 6-4 for Miami. Only one of the four runs in the inning was earned.
Miami's Ryne Robinson made the score 7-4 all by himself in the bottom of the seventh inning. After leading off the inning with an infield single, he advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on Canada's fly out to right before scoring on another wild pitch.
Miami played small ball in the bottom of the eighth to push across three more runs and make the score 10-4. After junior Jason Brown (Fairfield, Ohio) doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs, Radley laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that scored sophomore Brandon Hillier (Hinsdale, Ill.) from third and advanced Brown 90 feet closer to the plate. Brown scored two pitches later on yet another wild pitch.
Later in the eighth, senior Courtney Campbell (Evansville, Ind.) walked and came into score Miami's 10th run on Slone's infield single after stealing second and moving over to third on a groundball to the right side.
Sophomore Jeff Day (West Chester, Ohio) relieved Ely in the eighth inning and held the Knights scoreless through the games final two innings and struck out four batters. Ely picked up the first win of his collegiate career after throwing 7.0 innings and allowing just six hits while striking out seven batters.
Robinson, Slone, Canada and Frietch each had two hits as part of Miami's 11-hit attack.
The RedHawks take the field again on Thursday when they play the Bisons of Bucknell University at 8 p.m. at Manatee Community College in Bradenton, Fla.
