Sporting an undefeated record through the first three weeks of the season, the Miami University women's swimming and diving team (5-0, 3-0 MAC) seeks their six-straight win when they visit the Wright State Raiders in non-conference action on Friday, Nov. 11. Miami then looks to extend its MAC dual-meet winning streak to 36 when it faces the Eastern Michigan Eagles in its conference home opener at the Nixon Aquatic Center on Saturday, Nov. 12.
FOR ALL YOUR HARDWARE NEEDS: Following her sweep of the boards in Miami's three wins last weekend, senior diver Christin Eberst was named the Mid-American Conference's Swimming and Diving Co-Athlete of the Week (Nov. 8). Eberst began the weekend by helping Miami to a pair of wins in its home-opening tri-meet against Illinois and Marshall (Nov. 4). After winning the one-meter board, Eberst posted a score of 307.20 in the three-meter dive, besting her own school record of 295.42 set the previous week against Buffalo (Oct. 29). Against Ball State (Nov. 5), Eberst swept the diving events for the fourth-consecutive meet, notching the meet's top scores in the one- and three-meter dives. Eberst has started the 2005-06 season by winning eight-straight diving events, and dating back to last year, she has won 23 of the last 30 diving events she has entered.
WE'RE GOING STREAKING: The RedHawks look to extend their streak of 35 consecutive MAC dual-meet wins when Eastern Michigan visits the Nixon Aquatic Center on Nov. 12. In the 2005-06 season, Miami has already defeated MAC foes Akron (Oct. 28), Buffalo (Oct. 29) and Ball State (Nov. 5). The RedHawks have four MAC dual meets remaining with Eastern Michigan (Nov. 12), Toledo (Jan. 21), Ohio (Jan. 28) and Bowling Green (Feb. 4), and they have not lost a MAC dual meet since Feb. 3, 2001 when they were defeated by Eastern Michigan.
FRESHMAN FREESTYLING: In her first season at Miami, freshman distance swimmer Jenn Flaherty has made a seamless transition to the Division I level, winning six of the first eight events she has entered. In her first four meets, Flaherty has won the 1000 free three times, the 500 free twice and the 1650 free one time. The only two events she did not win were the 500 free versus Illinois/Marshall (Nov. 4) and the 200 breast against Buffalo (Oct. 29).
BROOM SHAKALAKA: In impressive fashion, senior Christin Eberst has swept the diving events at each of the RedHawks first four meets and helped Miami to an undefeated start. Last season's MAC Co-Diver of the Year, Eberst has won eight-straight diving events to open the 2005-06 season, and she also reset the school record in the three-meter dive (307.20) with her performance in the Illinois/ Marshall tri-meet (Nov. 4). Including last season, Eberst has won 23 of the last 30 diving events she has entered.
BACK TO BASICS: Another Miami freshman that has been solid in her debut season is Malarie Schmidt. One of the RedHawks top incoming freshman, Schmidt has won at least one event in each of Miami's first four meets, including multiple wins in the 100 and 200 back in the RedHawks tri-meet versus Illinois/Marshall (Nov. 4). Schmidt has won four of the six backstroke events she has entered while also tallying a first-place finish in the 200 IM versus Buffalo (Oct. 29).
TWICE THE FUN: Seven different RedHawks have posted mutiple wins in a meet this season, helping stake Miami to an undefeated start. Led by diver Christin Eberst who has notched multiple wins at each of Miami's four meets, six other athletes -- Jenn Flaherty, Katie Forster, Margaret Patrick, Malarie Schmidt, Allison Stevens and Katie Unger -- have won multiple events in at least one meet. In addition, two RedHawks, Flaherty and Patrick, have won multiple events at two meets, while Eberst has tallied a pair of victories at four straight meets.
ONE-STOP RECORD SHOP: Miami returns three school-records holders for the 2005-06 campaign as Laura Armbruster (400 IM-set in 2005), Maggi Bulla (200 free-set in 2004) and Katie Forster (500 free-set in 2003; 200 fly set in 2005) all rejoin the RedHawks.
2005 PREVIEW: After winning their fourth-consecutive Mid-American Conference Championship and 15th overall conference title last year, the Miami women's swimming and diving team opens their 2005 season on a "Drive for Five." Head coach Dave Jennings returns 22 returning letterwinners and five all-conference swimmers from last season's championship squad, as Miami will be attempting to win five-consecutive MAC Championships for the second time in school history.
