OXFORD, Ohio - In their home-opening meet at Nixon Aquatic Center, the Miami University women's swimming and diving team (4-0, 2-0 MAC) remained unbeaten as they swept their tri-meet against the University of Illinois and Marshall University. The RedHawks defeated Big Ten foe Illinois, 169-125, and defeated former Mid-American Conference rival Marshall, 208-84.
Miami started the meet by placing the top two teams in the 400 medley relay, beginning a string of five-consecutive events that the RedHawks would win. Freshman Jenn Flaherty (Scarborough, Maine/ Scarborough) followed by winning the 1000 free, her second win in that event on the season, and senior Katie Forster (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) made it three wins in a row for Miami with her first-place finish in the 200 free. Forster went on to finish in the top three in each of her three events - 200 free, 200 fly and 500 free - at the tri-meet.
After Forster's win, freshman Malarie Schmidt (Batavia, Ill./Rosary) won the 100 back - one of two wins she would post at the meet - and sophomore Kristen Bezier (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) won the 100 breast. The RedHawks then had two second-place finishers in the next two events, the 200 fly and 50 free, before senior Christin Eberst (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenedehowa) posted a Miami win in the one-meter dive. Eberst would also post a first-place finish in the three-meter dive, marking the third-consecutive meet in which last season's MAC Co-Diver of the Year swept the boards.
Schmidt (200 back) and Eberst (three-meter dive) were the only RedHawks to tally wins over the final seven events, but Miami still cruised to a pair of wins and remained unbeaten heading into Saturday's dual meet versus the Ball State Cardinals.
Miami seeks to extend its streak of 34 consecutive dual-meet wins when it travels to Muncie, Ind. to face the Cardinals. The meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
