After sweeping a pair of Mid-American Conference road dual meets last weekend, the Miami University women's swimming and diving team opens the home portion of their 2005-06 season when they host Marshall University and the University of Illinois on Friday, Nov. 4. at the Nixon Aquatic Center. Miami then looks to extend their MAC dual-meet winning streak to 35 when they travel to face the Ball State Cardinals on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m.
MIAMI AND THE BIG TEN: In their tri-meet on Friday, Miami welcomes Big Ten foe Illinois to the Nixon Aquatic Center. The RedHawks seek to exact some revenge on the Big Ten Conference as their last meet versus a Big Ten team was 148-95 loss against Ohio State on Nov. 13, 2004. In that meet, the Buckeyes handed Miami its lone dual meet loss of the 2004-05 season as Ohio State won 11 of the 13 events.
WE'RE GOING STREAKING: The RedHawks look to extend their streak of 34 consecutive MAC dual-meet wins when they visit Ball State (Nov. 5) in the second weekend of the 2005-06 season. In the 2005-06 season, Miami has already defeated Akron (Oct. 28) and Buffalo (Oct. 29), and the RedHawks have not lost a MAC dual meet since Feb. 3, 2001 when they were defeated by Eastern Michigan.
CHAIR (WO)MAN OF THE BOARD: Senior Christin Eberst led a strong Miami effort in the boards in the season-opening weekend as she swept both the one- and three-meter dive in the RedHawks' wins over Akron (Oct. 28) and Buffalo (Oct. 29). The reigning MAC Co-Diver of the Year, Eberst won a total of 15 diving events in the 2004-05 season, and she holds four Miami diving records--the Varsity (298.20) and MAC (298.20) records in the one-meter dive, and the Varsity (11 dives - 509.60) and Nixon Aquatic Center (six dives - 287.02) records in the three-meter board.
ONE-STOP RECORD SHOP: Miami returns three school-records holders for the 2005-06 campaign as Laura Armbruster (400 IM-set in 2005), Maggi Bulla (200 free-set in 2004) and Katie Forster (500 free-set in 2003; 200 fly set in 2005) all rejoin the RedHawks.
TOP FINISHES: In the season-opening weekend, the RedHawks had 11 different athletes win events as they swept a pair of dual meets against Akron (Oct. 28) and Buffalo (Oct. 29). Led by senior Christin Eberst's four individual wins, Miami had seven athletes win mulitple events. Freshman Jenn Flaherty took home three individual titles, while five RedHawks--freshmen Malarie Schmidt and Allison Stevens, junior Margaret Patrick and seniors Katie Unger and Maggi Bulla--each won two events. Senior Laura Armbruster, junior Ashley Petak and sophomores Kristen Bezier and Kathryn Stephens each posted one win on the weekend.
ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?: Miami welcomes back an experienced squad this season as it boasts a 20-member junior/senior class led by All-MAC First Team honorees Laura Armbruster, Katie Unger and Christin Eberst. The RedHawks' group of seven seniors are attempting to become the sixth perfect senior class in Miami history and win every MAC title for which they competed. Five previous classes--1986, 1987, 1988, 1999 and 2005--have won four MAC titles in a row.
2005 Preview: After winning their fourth-consecutive Mid-American Conference Championship and 15th overall conference title last year, the Miami women's swimming and diving team opens their 2005 season on a "Drive for Five." Head coach Dave Jennings returns 22 returning letterwinners and five all-conference swimmers from last season's championship squad, as Miami will be attempting to win five-consecutive MAC Championships for the second time in school history.
2004-05 RECAP: During the 2004-05 season, Miami completed its fourth perfect MAC dual season and went on to win its fourth straight MAC Championship as they bested second-place Ohio 562.5-507 at the conference meet. After posting a 13-1 record (8-0 MAC), Miami had three individuals win gold medals at the MAC meet as Trisha Lamb won the 200 Backstroke, junior Katie Unger won the 100 Breaststroke, and junior Christin Eberst won the one-meter dive. Six RedHawks garnered all-conference honors, including four first-team members, and the class of 2005 left Miami as the fifth perfect graduating class in school history as it won every MAC title for which it competed. The conference championship was Miami's 15th overall title in school history. The RedHawks won seven in a row from 1982-88, four in a row from 1996-99 and four in a row from 2002-05.
