BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Led by sophomore Jennie Stoll's (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) 55th-place finish, the Miami University women's cross country team placed 13th out of 32 teams at the Great Lakes Regional on Saturday afternoon.
A second-team all-MAC selection, Stoll tallied her seventh-consecutive top team finish as she clocked in at 22:42.9. After sitting out the season-opening Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge because of an injury, Stoll was the top Miami finisher in each of the team's final seven races.
Miami placed a trio of sophomores among the meet's top 75 finishers as Stoll, Sarah Henize (Bucyrus, Ohio/Bucyrus) and Carol Eckerly (Beavercreek, Ohio) were the top three RedHawk runners. Henize finished in 60th place with a time of 22:51.5, while Eckerly placed 74th, clocking in at 23:05.9.
Rounding out Miami's scoring five were seniors Kristen Proach (Canton, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Kelly Ardelean (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville). Proach finished 188th in 23:46.1, and Ardelean turned in a 120th-place finish with a time of 23:48.5.
Facing a field that featured three schools ranked in the top 25 in the FinishLynx National Poll, the RedHawks finished ahead of conference rivals Kent State, Western Michigan, Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan. Miami also bested in-state rivals Ohio State and Cincinnati.
By finishing as the top two schools at the 6K Indiana Cross Country Course, Michigan and Notre Dame earned the region's two automatic bids to the national meet.
Miami failed to qualify for the NCAA Championship, but the regional meet concluded a successful season for 22nd-year head coach Richard Ceronie and the RedHawks. Miami opened its season with three top-four finishes, including a first-place finish at the Cedarville Invitational on Sept. 17, and it placed one runner, Stoll, on the all-conference squad.
