RedHawks Open Season With 184-114 Win Over Akron

AKRON, Ohio - In their season-opening meet, the Miami University women's swimming and diving team (1-0, 1-0 MAC) stretched their streak of consecutive Mid-American Conference dual-meet wins to 33 with a 184-114 win over the Akron Zips on Friday afternoon. At Ocasek Natatorium, the RedHawks won 10 of the 16 events, including placing the top three finishers in both the 200 backstroke and three-meter diving competition.
Making her Miami debut, freshman Jenn Flaherty (Scarborough, Maine/ Scarborough) made a seamless transition to the college ranks as she posted the sixth-best time in school history in the 1000 free (10:16.47). She was one of three RedHawk athletes earn wins in multiple events as Flaherty posted wins in both the 500 and 1000 free.
Seniors Katie Unger (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and Christin Eberst (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) also won multiple events for the RedHawks. Unger won the 100 free (53.18) and 100 breast (1:05.36), while Eberst, the reigning MAC Co-Diver of the Year, swept the boards by posting wins in the one- and three-meter dives.
Other RedHawks with top finishes were junior Margaret Patrick (Marietta, Ga./Holy Innocents) in the 50 free, senior Laura Armbruster (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) in the 200 IM, senior Maggi Bulla (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline) and freshman Malarie Schmidt (Batavia, Ill./Rosary) in the100 back. Also making her Miami debut, Schmidt impressed as she was the only freshman other than Flaherty to win an event.
The RedHawks swept two events on the afternoon as they placed the top three swimmers in the 200 back and the top three divers in the three-meter dive. Overall, Miami athletes accounted for two of the top three finishers in 14 of the 16 events.
Miami seeks to continue its MAC dual-meet winning streak when it visits Buffalo on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m.
