CLEVELAND - In their season-opening dual meet, the Miami University men's swimming and diving team (1-0, 0-0 MAC) received individual wins from five different athletes as they defeated the Cleveland State Vikings 125.5-117.7 on Friday afternoon at Busbey Natatorium. Leading by only 13 points heading into the final event, the outcome was uncertain until the RedHawks placed second and third in the 400 freestyle relay to secure the victory.
Paul Ricard (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) was the only Miami swimmer to win multiple events as he posted wins in both the 1000 free (9:20.44) and the 500 free (4:34.58). Other Miami swimmers to post top finishes were Theo Kuczek (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) in the 50 free, Blake Norman (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) in the 200 IM, Scott Robson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) in the 200 fly and Griffin Marshall (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) in the 200 breast.
Miami also received promising performances from their freshman class as newcomers Scott DuCharme (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) and Chris Heaton (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) both had strong showings. DuCharme placed third in the 1000 free and fourth in the 200 fly, while Heaton posted a pair of top-three finishes in the diving events. Heaton was the runner-up in the one-meter dive and the third-place finisher in the three-meter dive.
In a see-saw matchup, the two teams traded wins in each event until the Vikings posted top finishes in the 100 free and 200 back, the eighth and ninth events of the meet. Those wins would be the only back-to-back wins that either team would manage the entire night.
Miami looks to open the season with back-to-back dual-meet wins when it visits Buffalo on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m.
