Box Score

OXFORD, Ohio - The University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks (12-9-2, 10-7-2) came into Goggin Ice Arena on Friday night and did something they had never done before--beat Miami University (8-13-4, 4-10-3 CCHA) on its home ice. Coming into the contest the RedHawks led the series at Goggin, 4-0-2, but a pair of UNO goals in the third period prevented Miami from keeping that perfect record intact as the Mavericks skated to a 5-2 victory.

Miami opened the scoring very early in the first period by doing something they hadn't done since Dec. 29, 2004. Sophomore Marty Guerin (Lansing, Mich.) scored the RedHawks first power-play goal in their last 33 chances when he stationed himself to the left of the Nebraska-Omaha net and one-timed a pass from senior Todd Grant (Indianapolis, Ind.) past Chris Holt at 5:24. Freshman Mitch Ganzak (Redford, Mich.) was credited with the second assist.

The lead didn't last long for the RedHawks as UNO answered at the 7:58 mark. A centering pass by Brandon Scero was redirected to the left of the Miami net where David Phillips was waiting on the doorstep to bang it in.

The Mavericks took the lead just 49 seconds into the second period on an unassisted goal from Bill Thomas. The freshman intercepted a Miami pass in the neutral zone and skated in all alone to beat sophomore Brandon Crawford-West (San Diego, Calif.) between the legs.

Nebraska-Omaha doubled its lead midway through the second by taking advantage of another Miami turnover in the neutral zone as Dan Hacker made it 3-1 for the Mavericks with a shorthanded goal at 8:43. It was the seventh time the RedHawks had been scored upon while on the power play this year.

Freshman Charley Fetzer (Chicago, Ill.) lit the lamp with Miami's second power-play goal of the game at 2:05 of the third. Fetzer's first collegiate goal drew the RedHawks to within one goal, at 3-2, but UNO quickly regained its two-goal lead with a power-play goal at 4:10.

The Mavericks made it 5-2 midway through the third to mark the first time since Nov. 5 versus Michigan that Crawford-West allowed five goals in a game.

Miami was 2-for-10 on the power play while UNO converted one of five chances.

Notes: SR F Joe Pomaranski became the fifth current RedHawk to have appeared in 100 or more games ... SO F Marty Guerin's power-play goal in the first period was just Miami's first goal with the man-advantage since scoring versus Colorado College (Dec. 29), a stretch of 33 chances without converting ... Guerin's goal marked the 15th time this season that Miami had scored first ... the RedHawks are 7-6-2 when scoring first ... Miami scored two power-play goals for the first time since Dec. 29 versus Colorado College.
