Box Score

Charlottesville, Va. - The Miami RedHawks and Davidson Wildcats met on the pitch at the University of Virginia on Sunday afternoon and for 57 minutes played scoreless hockey with both defenses denying breakaways and short corners, but Miami was able to capitalize on a pair of breakaways late in the second half to defeat Davidson 2-0. Sophomore Danielle Perrecone and junior Keri von Kalinowski scored within a span of 5:03 late in the second half to lead the RedHawks, who had 16 short corners to Davidson's four, all of which came in the second half of play. Miami had eight shorts and seven short corners in the first half, but Davidson's Sarah Nolan had six saves to keep the RedHawks off the board. At the other end of the pitch, Kerri Orr came out of the cage to stop a breakaway by Kayli Maxwell, and the two sides went into the break tied at 0-0. In the second half, Davidson notched the first short corner of the half-their first of the game-but the Wildcats were unable to convert on either of two consecutive attempts. With just under 13 minutes to play, the RedHawks' Meredith Lee brought the ball up the left side of the pitch and took the ball into the circle where it was knocked loose. Perrecone jumped on the loose ball at the top of the circle and sent it to the boards at the 57:16 mark of the game, giving Miami a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later a Miami free hit along the right side of the pitch was collected by Lee, who sent it to Alyssa Nye in the circle. Nye sent the ball to the stroke mark, where von Kalinowski hit the ball to the nets, putting the RedHawks up 2-0. Miami will remain in Charlottesville to take on the host Cavaliers on Monday, Sept 6 at 4:00, while Davidson will travel to play at Wake Forest, the two-time defending national champions, on Wednesday, Sept. 8.
