OXFORD, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference has had 13 players selected in this year's Major League Baseball First-Year Player draft and leading the pack is Miami with four selections. The RedHawks most recent selection in the draft is senior pitcher Matt Raguse who was redrafted in the 24th round by the San Francisco Giants.
Raguse, who had previously been drafted in 2001 and 2002 by the Arizona Diamondbacks, was the 730th overall pick in this year's draft after emerging as one of the RedHawks' better midweek starters. With a 4.34 earned run average in 18 appearances and three starts, Raguse recorded the staff's third lowest in 37.1 innings pitched. He was particulary effective this season allowing opponents to bat only .268 from the plate with four home runs.
Raguse joins fellow RedHawks, senior Chad Reineke, junior John Slone and junior first baseman Mike Ferris as the only four RedHawks to be drafted. Some historical research also has found that Ferris is indeed not the highest-drafted player from Miami, as that title belongs to pitcher Bill Long (1979-81). Long was drafted with the 32nd overall pick in the second round of the 1981 draft by the San Diego Padres.
