RedHawks Take Second At 2004 MAC Championships

YPSILANTI, Mich. - Senior Andrew Keefe (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) completed a hat trick, winning his third event of the meet, in leading Miami University's men's swimming & diving team to a second-place finish at the 2004 MAC Championships. Host Eastern Michigan easily won its 24th MAC Championship, scoring 1,010 points, while the RedHawks finished with 699 point, 107 ahead of third place.
Keefe was voted Oustanding Senior by his peers, and took home Co-Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet honors. The all-MAC first team featured Keefe, juniors Jason Krasula (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and diver Peter Donohue (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), as well as sophomore Scott Robson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) and freshman Paul Ricard (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green). Miami's Todd Spohn was named the Diving Coach of the Year.
After winning both the 50 and 200 freestyle in the past two nights, Keefe topped the field in 44.95. Freshman Justin Marcy (Daytona Beach, Fla./Fairfield) was victorious in the consolation heat. The RedHawks also won the consolation heats of the 200 breaststroke and 200 backstroke events. In the 200 breast, freshman Griffin Marshall (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) took second (2:02.95) and senior Peter Jacob Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) took sixth as part of the championship heat, as senior Michael Pater won the consolation heat and took ninth. Krasula took third in the 200 back with a time of 1:48.29, as sophomore Andrew O'Neill (Rockaway, N.J./Oratory Prep) won the consolation heat and junior John Grubb (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) finished second in the second heat.
Ricard took third in the 1,650 free with a time of 15:35.43, while Robson was close behind in sixth. Sophomores David Hine (Crescent Springs, Kentucky/Covington Catholic) and Dan Guibord (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) took 10th and 11th, respectively, to scored points for Miami. Robson also took third in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall in 1:50.62, ahead of freshman Michael Donohoe (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) in sixth.
Behind the first-place Eagles and second-place RedHawks was Ball State with 592 points. The Cardinals held on to third from day one, and finished ahead of Ohio in fourth (515 points) and Buffalo (322) in fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the three-meter diving sophomore Zach Niehaus (Taylor Mill, Kentucky/Scott) paced Miami, taking third, less than 13 points out of first. One-meter champion, Donohue, took sixth, while sophomore Eric Teske (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville) took seventh.
The RedHawks also took fourth in the 400 freestyle relay. The quartet of Marcy, Ricard, Keefe and sophomore Pat Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) shaved almost three seconds off their seed time, completing the distance in 3:06.17.
The 2004 season ended on a high note for Miami. Besides a second-place championship finish, the Red and White finished second in the regular season with a 3-1 MAC record, while also finishing 6-4, overall. Five RedHawks were also named MAC Swimmer/Diver of the Week.
