RedHawks Sit Fourth After Day One At MAC Championships

YPSILANTI, Mich. - Senior Andrew Keefe (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) won the 50 freestyle and junior Peter Donohue (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) topped the one-meter diving to lead Miami University's men's swimming & diving on the first day of the 2004 MAC Championships Thursday night in Ypsilanti. Just 25 points seperate the RedHawks from second place.
Competing in the 50 free for the first time at the MAC Championships, Keefe paced the field, touching the wall in 20.52. Freshman Justin Marcy (Daytona Beach, Fla./Fairfield) also scored for Miami, taking 16th with a time of 22.03. In the final event of the evening Keefe swam with the second-place 400 medley relay, teaming with classmate Andy Uhlenberg (Rochester, Minn./John Marshall), junior Jason Krasula (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and freshman Griffin Marshall (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep). The foursome completed the distance in 3:21.30.
Donohue won the one-meter diving with 308.35, 25 points ahead of second place. Four other RedHawks scored points in the diving, as Zach Niehaus (Taylor Mill, Ky./Scott) took seventh, Eric Teske (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville) took ninth and Nick Kleinert (Rocky River, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and Brenden O'Brien (Glencoe, Ill./New Trier) took 11th and 16th, respectively.
Miami put two finishers in the top six of the 500 free, as freshman Paul Ricard (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) led the RedHawks with a third-place finish with a time of 4:28.52. Krasula took sixth for the Red and White, posting a time of 4:37.06.
The Eagles lead the day after day one with 294 points, ahead of Ohio with 200 points. Miami is just 25 points back of the Bobcats with 175 points, while Ball State sits third with 176. Buffalo finished the first day in fifth, scoring 102 points.
The session opened with a fourth-place showing by Miami in the 200 free relay. Marcy, junior John Grubb (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and sophomores Pat Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) and Brian O'Rourke (Beverly Hill, Mich./Groves) combined on the 1:26.16 effort.
Day two of the 2004 MAC Championships gets underway at noon with the day two preliminaries and the finals to follow at 7 p.m.
