OXFORD, Ohio - Junior third baseman Brian Canada broke out of a mini 2-for-12 slump versus the University of Cincinnati leading Miami to a 14-7 win over the Bearcats with a 2-for-3, four-RBI outing at Hayden Park at McKie Field. For Miami the win kept the RedHawks perfect at home this season, moving them to 2-0.

Miami opened up the scoring after a scoreless first inning putting up a pair of runs in both the second and third innings. In the second inning the Bearcats helped Miami's cause committing two of their four errors in the game. Canada drove in the first of his game-high four RBIs in the inning with an RBI single. In the third inning Miami scored on a Paul Frietch single and a ground out by Geoff Orr.

The RedHawks added three more in the fifth as Canada drove in a pair on a single and junior first baseman Mike Ferris notched his team-leading 29th RBI with a single of his own.

After UC climbed back into the game at 7-4 with four runs in the top of the sixth, Miami closed door piling on seven additional scores in the bottom of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

The big inning started as shortstop Courtney Campbell and center fielder Jason Brown opened up the frame with back-to-back singles. That set up Miami's other hitting star of the game John Slone's three-run homer. The RedHawks went on to add four more and carried a 14-4 lead heading to the eighth.

The Bearcats added three in the eighth but couldn't get any closer as freshman lefthander Keith Weiser shut the door just three baserunners in the final 1.1 innings.

In a game that Miami used seven hurlers sophomore Sam Shorts picked up the win, throwing 3.1 innings, giving up just two hits and striking out one. Shorts is now 2-1 on the year.

The RedHawks take to the field at Hayden Park again this Friday at 3 p.m. as they open up Mid-American Conference action versus archrival Ohio University. Miami, 13-8, overall plays the Bobcats in three nine innings games over the weekend, including 1 p.m. starts on Saturday and Sunday.
