DETROIT, Mich. - In a slow-paced consolation game at the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's Super Six tournament on Sunday afternoon, the No. 7 Miami (23-13-4) hockey team rattled off four goals in the first 40 minutes to defeat the Northern Michigan Wildcats, 4-0. The RedHawks, and the rest of Division I hockey, learn the 16-team NCAA tourney field on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Miami got on the board first for the second straight night when sophomore Andy Greene (Trenton, Mich.) registered his seventh goal of the season at 3:11 in the first frame. A back pass from senior Derek Edwardson (Morton Grove, Ill.) allowed Greene to fire the one-timer past NMU goalie Tuomas Tarkki. Freshman Matt Christie (Ajax, Ontario) created space in the zone when he broke past his NMU defender into the zone.
A breakaway goal at 8:06 gave the RedHawks a 2-0 lead when freshman Andy Nelson (Superior, Wis.) flipped a shot high gloveside past Tarkki for his fourth marker of the year. Greene recorded his second point of the night when he poked the puck away from an NMU forward at the red line and it was gathered in by Nelson at the blueline.
Junior Todd Grant (Indianapolis, Ind.) extended his goal-scoring streak to five games when he gave the Red and White a 3-0 lead at 8:27 in the second period. After Grant and linemate, sophomore Taylor Hustead (Scottsdale, Ariz.), worked a give-and-go at the blueline, Grant found the back of the net for the 15th time this season after Hustead's shot was stopped.
Moments after Miami killed off 1:45 of a Wildcats' 5-on-3 power play, senior Greg Hogeboom (Etobicoke, Ontario) upped the lead to 4-0 with his 19th goal of the season. Hogeboom fired a shot in the right corner of the goal at 15:52 in the second frame after Christie passed him the puck on the right wing. Also credited with an assist on the goal was senior Mike Kompon (Thunder Bay, Ontario).
Making 24 saves in between the pipes for the RedHawks was freshman goalie Brandon Crawford-West (San Diego, Calif.). The shutout is his third of the season.
The RedHawks head home to Oxford, Ohio with their second all-time win at JLA. Miami's team, family and friends will be watching the NCAA tournament selection show at Buffalo Wild Wings tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. The show begins at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
