RedHawks Finish League Season Undefeated With Win Over Marshall

OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University's women's swimming & diving team won 11 of the first 13 events, before exhibitioning the final three, to pick up a decisive 186-87 victory over Marshall Saturday afternoon at the Nixon Center. With the win, the RedHawks (12-1, 8-0 MAC) finished their third straight conference season undefeated and pushed their MAC winning streak to 25 meets.
Nine different RedHawks won events to send the senior class off in high fashion on senior day. The Red and White took the top three places six times, and top two nine times.
Redshirt freshman Maggi Bulla (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline) was the big winner, picking up wins in both the 200 and 500 freestyle events. In the 200 free, Bulla led a contingent of four teammates in the top four with her time of 1:53.78. Bulla was the first of three RedHawks atop the field in the 500 free, touching the wall in 5:08.42. No other Miami athlete won multiple individual events.
The meet got kicked off with Miami winning the 200 medley relay in 1:49.94. Competing on the relay were juniors Trisha Lamb (Oregon, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy), Cortney Dice (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) and Christel Frantz (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake), along with sophomore Katie Unger (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead). Lamb and Unger each won individual events, as Lamb was victorious in the 100 free (54.17) and Unger paced the field in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.12).
A trio of freshmen also picked up victories in Diana Zeleznikar (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River), Ashley Petak (North Potomoac, Md./Quince Orchard) and Ashley Seymour (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier). Zeleznikar was tops in the 50 free with a time of 24.77, while Petak won the 100 breast in 1:09.16 and Seymour won the 200 backstroke in 2:10.58.
Miami also picked up wins in the 1650 free, 100 back and three-meter diving. Sophomore Katie Forster (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) was the victor in the 1650 free with her time of 17:52.27, while senior Emily Maier (Fort Wright, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) won the 100 back in 1:02.68. Sophomore Christin Eberst (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) won the three-meter diving event with 304.80 points as senior Heidi Willemssen (Prior Lake, Minn./Lakeville) was second with 268.50.
The RedHawks have an extra week of rest before competing at the Midwest Conference Championships, Feb. 19-21, in Indianapolis. One week later, Miami plays host to the MAC Championships, Feb. 26-28. The Red and White are the two-time defending champions and have won a conference-record 13 league titles overall.
