RedHawks Keep Stranglehold On First At MAC Championships

OXFORD, Ohio - Sophomore Laura Armbruster (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) won the 100 breaststroke and the RedHawks posted five second-place finishes as Miami University's women's swimming & diving team extended its lead on day two of the Mid-American Conference Championships by 90 points. MU entered the night with a 65-point edge over second place, and now head into day three up 155 points on second-place Ohio.
Armbruster finished ahead of teammate Katie Unger (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) in the 100 breast, touching the wall in 1:04.45, while Unger was close behind in 1:04.65. In the 400 individual medley, Armbruster swam to a second-place finish with a time of 4:23.00, as freshman Ashley Seymour (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) took third and junior Trisha Lamb (Oregon, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) took sixth in the championship heat.
Redshirt freshman Maggi Bulla (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline) broke a school record with her second-place finish in the 200 freestyle. Bulla finished the distance in 1:51.13, topping the previous standard of 1:51.42. Senior Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) took eighth, while sophomore Katie Forster (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) was victorious in the consolation heat.
The Red and White posted second-place finishes in both relays, with times of 1:45.94 in the 200 medley relay and 7:31.67 in the 800 freestyle relay. The 200 medley team of Lamb, Unger and juniors Cortney Dice (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) and Christel Frantz (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) finished just 0.04 seconds back of first-place Ohio. The Bobcats also came out on top in the 800 free, as Miami edged Buffalo for second behind strong performances from Bulla, Seymour, Forster and Miranda.
In three-meter diving, sophomore Christin Eberst (Clifton, N.Y./Shenendehowa) duplicated her third-place finish from yesterday's one-meter event to lead the Red and White diving corps. Senior Heidi Willemssen (Prior Lake, Minn./Lakeville) scored points for Miami in 13th, while freshman Katie Meister (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) finished just out of the scoring, in 17th, for the second day in a row.
Miami holds a commanding lead over the field with a total of 485 points, 155 points ahead of Ohio (333 points). Akron, which held second place after last night, is in third with 301.5 points, while Ball State (298.5) and Bowling Green (277) round out the top five, respectively.
Marshall's Milla Kuurto was the talk of the meet after setting a MAC record in the 100 butterfly, reaching the wall in 54.21. Dice took fifth in 56.88 for Miami. The RedHawks also posted a fifth-place finish in the 100 backstroke, as Lamb posted a time of 57.97, ahead of Bulla in seventh.
The 24th MAC Championships wrap up on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. with the finals getting underway at 7 p.m. The 1650 free, a timed-final, begins at 5 p.m, with the championship heat being delayed until the beginning of the evening session.
