RedHawks Remain Atop Field At Midwest Conference Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Sophomore Ellen Koch (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) won her second event of the weekend to lead Miami University's women's swimming & diving team on day two of the Midwest Conference Classic. The RedHawks (478 points) retained their stranglehold on first place, 72 points ahead of Northern Colorado (406).
Yesterday's winner in the 200 individual medley, Koch topped the field in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.07, while senior Katie Scott (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) placed third. The RedHawk duo finished one and two, respectively, in the preliminaries of the event. Koch also took fourth in the 100 backstroke on the day, touching the wall in 1:00.19. Freshman Tyler Smith (Milledgeville, Ga./Baldwin) took first in the prelims of the 200 free before taking third in the finals (1:55.29).
Freshman Chloe Young-Hyman (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) and senior Casey Mangano (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula) each finished in the top four of the 100 breaststroke for Miami. Young-Hyman finished third in a time of 1:08.44, while Mangano was close behind in 1:08.85. Also taking fourth was senior Emily Maier (Fort Wright, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) in the 400 IM (4:45.53).
In the relay events, the RedHawks took second in the 800 freestyle and third in the 200 medley. The 800 free relay featured Scott, Smith, junior Morgan Kautz (Long Grove, Ill./Stevenson) and freshman Erin Darrah (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) and posted a time of 7:53.23. Scott teamed with Koch, Mangano and freshman Margaret Patrick (Marietta, Ga./Holy Innocents) for the 200 medley relay, which finished in 1:50.46.
The third, and final, day of the Midwest Conference Classic gets kicked off with a preliminary session at 11 a.m. The day's finals get under way at 6 p.m.
