Box Score
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Sophomore Courtney Salmon (Auburn, Wa./Auburn) struck out eight, walked none and scattered seven hits as Miami University's softball team (3-2) shut down Samford (2-4), 4-0, in its second game at the Sonic Challenge in Chattanooga. The RedHawks fell to Dayton (1-7), 2-1, in the day's first game, despite a stellar performance from freshman Heather Freudenberger (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) on the mound.
Miami went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning when sophomore Kristen Hays (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain) doubled and advanced to third on a balk with one out. Junior Jackie Poggendorf (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain) scored her high school teammate with a single through the left side.
The duo hooked up again in the third when Hays reached on an error and stole second before Poggendorf hit an RBI single to left. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield by sophomore Bianca Paz (Mesilla, N.M./Las Cruces). Paz scored the RedHawks' final run in the sixth after reaching on an infield single. Junior Sarah Buffie (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) scored Paz with a single up the middle.
In game one, Freudenberger, making her second collegiate start, carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Lindsay Jordan reached on an infield single and advanced to second on an error. The redshirt freshman had retired 16 straight batters to that point, following a lead-off walk in the first. Angie Barney followed with a single, before both Barney and Jordan scored on a sacrifice fly and error to put the Flyers ahead, 2-0. Both Dayton runs were unearned.
The RedHawks mounted a comeback as freshman Leslie Macedo (Livermore, Calif./Livermore) hit a solo home run to left field in the bottom half of the sixth. Miami put runners on second and third with one out, but couldn't get the tying run across.
Paz and Poggendorf each went 4-for-6 on the day to lead Miami, but the story of the day was the RedHawks' pitching as Freudenberger (0-2) and Salmon (2-0) combined for a 0.00 ERA, 10 strikeouts and just one walk. The underclassman duo scattered nine hits, while Salmon allowed just one Bulldog to reach third base.
The Red and White returns to action at the Sonic Challenge tomorrow with Western Kentucky at 10 a.m. Later in the day, Miami takes on the host UT-Chattanooga Lady Mocs at 4:45 p.m.
