INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Sophomore Ellen Koch (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) won the 200 individual medley in leading Miami University's women's swimming & diving team to the day-one lead at the Midwest Conference Classic in Indianapolis. The RedHawks scored 215 points on Friday evening to distance themselves from second-place Northern Colorado (163 points).
Koch, who was the top finisher in the preliminaries, touched the wall in 2:09.46 in the finals. Teammates Christen Fout (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hawken School) and Casey Mangano (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula) also finished inside the top five for Miami, taking third and fifth, respectively. Freshman Amber Kerek (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) also topped her preliminary field, before taking fourth in the 500 free finals (5:13.64). Four other RedHawks finished in the top-10 of the 500 free.
Red and White relays also scored big, posting a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay and fourth-place finish in the 200 freestyle. Seniors Emily Maier (Fort Wright, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) and Mangano teamed with junior Morgan Kautz (Long Grove, Ill./Stevenson) and Koch to post a time of 4:01.65 in the 400 medley. The 200 freestyle relay consisted of Kautz, junior Kelly Barcza (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) and freshmen Margaret Patrick (Marietta, Ga./Holy Innocents) and Tyler Smith (Milledgeville, Ga./Baldwin) completed the distance in 1:38.91.
Day two of the Midwest Conference Classic begins at 11 a.m. with preliminaries, while finals get kicked off at 6 p.m.
