CHICAGO - The Miami University senior synchronized skating team continued its dominance at the Midwestern Sectionals held this weekend in Chicago, Ill., by winning both the short program and the free skate competition with nine first-place ordinals in both events. The RedHawks were followed by Western Michigan, the Twin City Synergy and the Revolution from Illinois Valley in the standings.
Friday evening featured the short program, which the Red and White cruised through receiving first-place ordinals from all nine judges, which included a 5.8 from one of the judge and a pair of 5.6's. In Saturday's free program the RedHawks again swept the first place ordinals, picking up a high score of 5.8.
"This competition was an improvement over our last and that's what this team strives for after every week," said head coach Vicki Korn. "Our performance went a long way in preparing us for the challenges ahead at our first international competition, the Spring Cup in Milan, Italy, and the U.S. Nationals in March. Now we need to keep working hard in practice so we can reach our goal of medaling in the next two competitions."
The senior team takes a week off before opening up its international competition schedule by traveling to the Spring Cup on Feb. 13-15 in Milan, Italy. After the Spring Cup, the senior team has two weeks off to prepare for the U.S. National Championships in San Diego, Calif., an event they qualified for by winning the Midwestern Sectional.
