OXFORD, Ohio - Freshman Lauren Evanosky (Westport, Conn./Staples) entered her name on a Miami all-time top ten list while winning two individual events as the RedHawk women's swimming and diving team cruised past Akron on Saturday at the Nixon Aquatic Center, 177-20, to improve to 2-0 in the MAC and overall on the season. The win is Miami's 26th in a row over MAC schools since the 2001-02 season.
Though Evanosky made the only top-10 list change on Saturday, junior Katie Unger (Heartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and sophomore Margaret Patrick (Marietta, Ga./Holy Innocents) also won two individual events as Miami won nine of 16 competitions. All three teamed with junior Ellen Koch (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) to win the opening events, the 200 medley relay, in 1:48.28.
The 1650 free was a Miami sweep, as all four RedHawks touched the wall before any of their three Akron competitors did. Junior Katie Forster (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) won the event in 17:23.10.
Akron's closest margin in the team points race after the start of the meet came after the 200 free, when Megan Walters and Danielle Beland took first and second places, respectively. Akron pulled to within 34-21 at that point, but the RedHawk advantage grew for the rest of the meet.
Evanosky's record-altering time was in the 100 back, where she finished in 57.71 seconds, the seventh-fastest time in Miami history. Unger followed with her first individual win on the day when she won the 100 breast in 1:05.98. After Beland touched the wall first again in the 200 fly, Patrick won the 50 free in 24.27.
Following the 1-meter diving break, Patrick made it two individual wins on the day, taking the 100 free in 53.23 in a one-two-three Miami event finish. After junior Maggi Bulla (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline) won the 200 back in 2:07.49, Unger won her second individual event, taking the 200 breast in 2:22.11.
Walters and Beland followed with individual wins, but Miami swimmers took second and third in both events to keep the margin insurmountable. After Evanosky won the 200 IM in 2:06.92, for a 177-105 Miami lead, the RedHawks ceded the points in the 400 free relay to end the afternoon. Bulla, Unger, Patrick and sophomore Diana Zeleznikar (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) had the fastest time, finishing in 3:32.70.
Miami swims next against Ball State on Friday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. before visiting Ohio State that Saturday.
