OXFORD, OH -- Despite a goal from sophomore forward Marty Guerin (Ajax, Ont.), who missed the last six games with an injury, and a 25-save performance by sophomore netminder Brandon Crawford-West (San Diego, Calif.), the Miami hockey team dropped its seventh straight game, losing in overtime to Western Michigan University at the Goggin Ice Arena.
Guerin, who was returning from an leg injury, put the RedHawks out in front early scoring on a slap shot from the top of the left circle over the shoulder of Daniel Bellissimo. The goal, set up by Geoff Smith (Toronto, Ont.), was Guerin's first since an Oct. 16 win over Notre Dame.
That unfortunately would be the last goal for Miami. The Broncos knotted the game at one a piece at 16:13 of the second period and then put the game away as Vince Bellissimo, the brother of the freshman WMU goaltender Daniel, knocked home the game-winner shorthanded 2:41 into the overtime frame.
The loss ended an 11-game winless streak for Western Michigan in Oxford and extended the RedHawks losing streak to seven game, equalling the longest since 2001-02.
Miami (4-7-0, 2-5-0 CCHA) and Western Michigan (5-5-1, 3-5-1 CCHA) return to the ice again tomorrow night in Oxford. Faceoff is slated for 7:35 p.m. at the Goggin Ice Arena.
