This Week: Miami University's women's swimming & diving team travels to Bowling Green, Ohio, for a conference dual meet with Bowling Green on Friday, Jan. 30. The RedHawks and Falcons hit the pool at 5 p.m. as the RedHawks attempt to extend their winning streaks to nine overall meets, and 22 in MAC competition.
Last Time Out: The RedHawks won 30-of-32 events over the weekend to sweep Toledo and Eastern Michigan. On Friday, Miami won 14 events, including a pair of exhibitioned events, in upending the Rockets, 197-98. Against the Eagles on Saturday, the Red and White won all 16 events, again including a pair of exhibitioned events, in the 105-87 rout.
Sophomore Christin Eberst (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) led the charge by sweeping all four diving events over the weekend, while 15 other RedHawks won events.
Friendly Competition: Senior Amy Miranda (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) got an excellent jump on her season season, winning each 500 freestyle and 1000/1650 free event she entered through the season's first seven meets. Two weeks ago, she posted her first second-place finish in the 500, before finishing as a runner-up in the 1000 free last weekend. The winner of each event was sophomore Katie Forster (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville). The heir to Miranda's Miami distance throne, Forster broke Miranda's school record in the 500 free last season and has been among the team's most consistent performers in her time at Miami. In her first three seasons, Miranda has won five-of-six 500 and 1650 free MAC Championships, taking second once. Last season, Miranda qualified for the NCAA Championships in both.
Diver Dominance: After a successful freshman campaign, sophomore Christin Eberst has had anything but a sophomore jinx. After being the top point-scorer in 17 regular-season events in her NCAA-qualifying rookie season, the New York-native has won 14 consecutive diving events this year, including 15 of her last 16.
In regular-season meets and invitationals, Eberst has won 32-of-42 (.762) career diving events, including a 2-0 mark when she has exhibitioned.
We're Going Streaking!: With a pair of decisive wins in conference action this past weekend, the RedHawks have pushed their streak of conference dual-meet wins to 22. Before opening this season, 5-0, Miami went 8-0 in each of the previous two seasons. The last meet of the 2000-01 season pitted the Red and White against Buffalo and Eastern Michigan. The RedHawks fell to EMU, 157-143, but defeated UB to start the streak. Overall, Miami has won nine consecutive meets since falling in their season-opener to Purdue.
Getting It Done: A large reason for the Red and White's recent winning streaks has been consistency. During the 2003-04 conference season, Miami has managed to win at least 10 events each time, while averaging 12 per meet. MU has won 60-of-80 (.750) MAC dual-meet events. Overall, the RedHawks have come away with 91 wins in 136 dual meet events (.669), while holding five of their last six opponents under 100 points.
Mid-Major: Miami remain atop the current Mid-Major Poll released by CollegeSwimming.com. The RedHawks have accumulated 246.08 PowerPoints, nearly six full points ahead of MAC-foe Akron in second (240.42 points). The Mid-Major Poll consists of 22 conferences that are excluded from lucrative football and basketball television contracts.
Up Next: The RedHawks return to the Nixon Center to close out their regular conference season against Marshall and Ohio. Miami hosts the Thundering Herd on Friday, Feb. 6, and the Bobcats on Saturday, Feb. 7. The Red and White hit the pool at 5 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
