OXFORD, Ohio - Freshman Griffin Marshall (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) won both breaststroke events in leading Miami University's men's swimming & diving team to a sweep of Cincinnati and Kenyon, Friday night at the Corwin M. Nixon Center. The Red and White topped the Bearcats, 164-125, and the Lords, 187-101, after falling to both schools last season.
Sophomore Scott Robson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) remained hot of late, picking up a win in his fifth consecutive event. With a time 1:53.02, he paced the field in the 200 butterfly for his sixth win in that span. Four of his wins have come in the 200 fly, while the other two came in the 400 individual medley and 500 freestyle against Xavier.
Marshall paced the 100 breast field, hitting the wall in 57.80, less than a second off his season-low time. In the 200 breast, he finished just ahead of senior Paul Jacob (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) in second place, with a time of 2:06.78. The RedHawks also picked up a win the 200 freestyle relay, where freshmen Justin Marcy (Daytona Beach, Fla./Fairfield) and Andy Amyot (Fairport, NY/Fairport) teamed with sophomore Brian O'Rourke (Beverly Hills, Mich/Groves) and junior John Grubb (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) to post a time of 1:28.09 in the final event of the night.
Before the season, head coach Pete Lindsay said of his team's strength, "this is a team that can really beat you with depth," and tonight was a prime example. Aside from winning four events, the RedHawks put swimmers in second place in six events, while garnering three of the top four places in two events. Senior Andrew Keefe (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) led the way, swimming to second-place finishes in both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Miami was the lone team to compete in either diving event. Junior Peter Donohue (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) picked up wins from both the one- and three-meter boards for the Red and White.
The RedHawks have no rest as they travel to Columbus on Saturday, Jan. 17, for a dual meet with Ohio State. Miami and the Buckeyes hit the pool at noon.
